Another week down and a weekend ahead! With the weekend ahead, do you have any tasty plans cooking or baking up in your kitchen? Whatever plans you have, I hope they are delicious ones!
This weekend is yet another busy one where What's Cookin, Chicago will be taking on more culinary adventures. Here's what you can anticipate reading about here on the blog for the weekend...
- We're catching the foodie film, Pressure Cooker, where a Philadelphia high school culinary arts instructor inspires inner city student to cook. Check back here for our review!
- The smells of fresh homemade bread will be filling up my kitchen as friends join me as we bake a few different kinds from scratch. I'll be teaching a class focused on the Bread Baker's Apprentice challenges.
- Things continue to heat up in the kitchen as friends come over to learn some essential recipes to build upon. I'll be teaching a class focused on Cooking Building Blocks for 1 or 2.
For this week's Foodie Freebie Friday, I wanted to highlight an amazing local chef who's known the world over - Chef Grant Achatz. Having gone through quite a few culinary career highs with his restaurant, Alinea, he has also had his share of lows, having been diagnosed with stage 4 squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth. However his cancer is in full remission and to celebrate his work, he came out with his book, Alinea.
Because of Chef Grant Achatz's experience with cancer, I asked readers to share what they would miss most if they were to lose their sense of taste. It's amazing how we take our senses for granted and of the foods and flavors folks shared, chocolate definitely stood out. Not too far behind was the flavor of garlic as well as cheese. Well I couldn't agree more... chocolate, garlic and cheese are some distinctive flavors I'd miss too! As a small tidbit, I met someone a few days ago who has never, ever had chocolate in his whole entire life. To have not savored chocolate in a lifetime is shocking and Andy, if you're reading... I hope you give it a try!
One lucky reader will be receiving Chef Grant Achatz's wonderful book, Alinea, which I hope they will enjoy not only for the artistic display of culinary talent found within its pages but for the personal journey of Chef Grant Achatz has taken to produce such a book. Who's the lucky reader?
