Dr. Thomas Armstrong Romanticizes Autism Disorders and Autism's Gadfly Holds Him Accountable

Yesterday I commented in Synaptic Disorder Instead Of Autism Spectrum Disorder? on the romanticization of autism disorders by those who subscribe to the Neurodiversity ideology.  At Autism's Gadfly Jonathan Mitchell has dissected a very blatant example of  romanticization and misrepresentation of autism disorders.

In Thomas Armstrong's book on neurodiversity Jonathan describes as offensive the title of Dr. Armstrong's new book "Neurodiversity discovering the extraordinary gifts of autism ADHD, Dyslexia and other brain differences. "  I agree with Jonathan's description of the book title as offensive. I  refer you to Jonathan's commentary for the details but, as the father of a boy who is severely affected by Autistic Disorder, whose life will be one of living dependent on the care of others,  I am sick and tired of careers being made, and books being sold, by people promoting flimsy, unrealistic, misrepresentations of autism based on the  successes of a few high functioning persons with autism or Aspergers.

As I said yesteday, maybe it is time to drop the "autism" label altogether and look at Autism Disorder as Synaptic Disorder.  "Synaptic" doesn't sound like it would be as  easy to market, and misrepresent to a gullible mainstream media, as "autism".

Autism's Gadfly Takes lbrb's Kev Leitch to Task for Absurd Neurodiversity Logic

Autism's gadfly, Jonathan Mitchell has written a comment taking lbrb's Kevin Leitch to task for his loopy defense of Neurodiversity. In Left brain, right brain or no brain, Jonathan, as always, is exceedingly polite, a quality of discourse not always found at lbrb and other ND sites when trashing Jonathan for refusing to drink the Neurodiversity Kool-Aid.

Autism's Gadfly Does Some Neurodiversity Myth Busting

Jonathan Mitchell does some Neurodiversity myth busting in his recent post More mythology from neurodiversity. Jonathan is commenting on the Dan Marino promoted video by Ari Ne'eman, a gentleman with Aspergers Disorder, and some other persons, at least one of whom is hard to believe has any type of autism spectrum disorder diagnosis, and their creation of new Neurodiversity flavored autism myths.

Jonathan suffers from a mild autism spectrum disorder. While he and I do not agree on all autism related issues I have great respect for his honesty. Jonathan's honesty is not held in the same esteem though by Neurodiversity ideologues who are angry at him, as an autistic person, for refusing to drink the Neurodiversity Kool-Aid.

Jonathan addresses a number of ND Myths in this comment, including one of my often repeated criticism's: the insistence of someone like Ari Ne'eman, a very intelligent, highly articulate, high functioning individual, diagnosed at age 12 with Aspergers Disorder after initially being diagnosed with ADHD, to pretend to be able to speak on behalf of ALL persons on the autism spectrum of disorders even the most severely affected by Autistic Disorder. Ari Ne'eman uses the royal "we" to pretend to speak about autism disorders on behalf of people he has never met, with whom he has nothing in common and, as in the case of my son, with whom he does not have the same autism spectrum diagnosis.

My son Conor has Autistic Disorder, assessed with profound developmental delays. He has absolutely nothing in common with Ari Ne'eman, previously diagnosed with ADHD, and now diagnosed with Aspergers Disorder. Conor's Autistic Disorder deficits include limited communication and understanding of abstract concepts. He engages in self injurious and occasionally aggressive behavior and he will NOT, like Mr. Ne'eman, live an independent life, attend college and pose in numerous media interviews in which he purports to speak on behalf of anyone, including himself.

Michelle Dawson's False Claims Allegations? Where's the Evidence?

Jonathan Mitchell of Autism's Gadfly has run afoul, like so many others have, of Michelle Dawson.

On the discussion board Misbehaviour of Behaviourists Ms Dawson has accused Jonathan of making false statements about her. Apparently Jonathan made a statement about Ms Dawson's communications with the IACC, the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee that might not have been correct; or at least not literally correct. Ms Dawson takes Jonathan to task over the issue at the Misbehaviour of Behaviourists. Then, out of left field, Ms Dawson also accuses me of making false claims about her as well:

Still in the "pants-on-fire" dept., for what Mr Mitchell wrote on his blog, see /m8990. What Mr Mitchell has claimed on his blog is false. He made it up.

If Mr Mitchell did not make anything up, as he claims, then I'm sure he can provide sources to support his claim that I was "writing letters trying to influence the direction of NIMH autism research" and so was Mike S.

I suggest that as with Mr Doherty, no one should believe Mr Mitchell when he makes any claims about people he disagrees with, unless Mr Mitchell can provide sources (in this case, links to all the "letters" Mike S and I have written to the NIMH) to support his views.

Some day when I have a lot of spare time, I'll try to find and list all the false claims, misrepresentations, etc., made about me and my colleagues by Mr Mitchell and Mr Doherty.

As you can see Ms Dawson did not provide any specifics, particulars, examples, information or evidence of any kind whatsoever to substantiate her out of left field allegations against me. She just decreed that I have made false claims and informed her loyal subjects that some day, when she had the time, she would bother herself with substantiating her allegations. That my friends is the work of Michelle Dawson, autism researcher and anti-ABA activist.

To my knowledge the statements that I have consistently made about Ms Dawson are that:

1) She is an anti-ABA activist ( see the title of her forum (the Misbehaviour of Behaviourists), her appearances before the Supreme Court of Canada and the Canadian Senate in opposition to ABA for Canada's autistic children and her numerous media comments opposing ABA.)

2) That her anti-ABA views are inconsistent with the views of numerous credible authorities in the United States, like the US Surgeon General, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the MADSEC (Maine) Autism Task Force, the NY State Department of Health, and the Association for Science in Autism Treatment to name the most prominent.

I stand by these statements which are factually correct. And I caution anyone against putting too much weight on any of Michelle Dawson's allegations and statements that she has made against anyone, professional, reporter, parent or autistic person who dares to disagree with her views.

Autism Reporting: Mainstream Media's Incompetent Handling of Autism Issues

One point that has become crystal clear in the recent discussion of the vaccine-autism war. The mainstream media, as a general rule, is not competent in its coverage of autism issues. The New York Times and the Globe & Mail (self promoted as "Canada's National Newspaper") have been brutally one-sided in their misrepresentation of vaccine-autism issues. They have largely abandoned their journalists' hats to promote the views of public health authorities and the vaccine industry.

CNN's Campbell Brown has also weighed in with a largely ignorant, mostly bull and lots of bias, attack on those who express concerns about vaccine safety and autism disorders. Contrary to Brown's ill informed opinion there is evidence in support of a vaccine autism link. Science has not "decided" the issue. The question, according to at least 3 very senior and credible health authorities, doctors Healy, Gerberding and Alexander, is still very much open and should be studied further. On other autism issues Canada's CBC, the New Yorker, and many other major media outlets have pandered to the Neurodiversity movement's misrepresentation of autism and persons with autism.

There have been exceptions. The Vancouver Sun did an excellent series, Faces of Autism, on the diversity of autism spectrum disorders and was not afraid to show and describe the realities of life for a severely autistic girl and her vamily. Faces of Autism, with its balanced, honest portrayl of autism was everything in terms of responsible journalism that the CBC's Positively Autistic series was not. Likewise CBS (and US News and World Report) have done some excellent work on the vaccine-autism war presenting the very learned, well informed views of Dr. Healy that the existing studies are not specific enough to address population subsets that might be more vulnerable to autism exposure.

The reality today is that those actively informed about autism issues and seeking more perspective on autism issues are more likely to find them on the blogosphere. The Huffington Post has featured the autism vaccine issues on its Autism News page. It has provided an outlook for both sides of the debate, with David Kirby and Robert F. Kennedy featured on the same page as vaccine patent holder and industry spokesperson Dr Paul Offit. The Age of Autism is not as balanced as the Huffington Post but is an excellent site for information from the perspective of those who believe that vaccines cause or contribute to autism disorders.

Informed, balanced blogs are now being written by academics and professionals interested in autism issues. One of my favorites is Autism Research Blog: Translating Autism authored by Nestor L. Lopez-Duran Ph.D. a clinical child psychologist and neuroscience researcher working at a large Midwest university-based child psychiatric institute. The Lovaas Institute and the Center for Autism and Related Disorders also have blogs.

There are many fine parent blogs of which this blog is the best (just kidding). Many are listed on the side bar of this blog. There are also blogs by autistic persons, including Jonathan Mitchell's autism's gadfly and a blog by autistic artist Stephanie Lynn Keil.

The Neurodiversity movement with its anti-treatment, anti-cure, social construct model of autism has many blogs including the neurodiversity page at change.org authored by Dora Raymaker and Kristina Chew and Kevin Leitch's LB/RB. The latter site can offer provocative discussion on important issues at times but often degenerates into smears, name calling and insults of those who do not share a neurodiversity perspective. About.com Autism by Lisa Jo Rudy is a corporate blog written by a parent who shares a neurodiversity perspective but tries honestly to present all sides of autism issues objectively and with impeccable courtesy.

The mainstream corporate media really showed its colors with its grossly unbalanced reporting of the Autism Omnibus hearings jumping up and down in the air and declaring that science has spoken and that vaccines do not cause autism. The same media ignored the 2007 decision in Bank v HHS for which compensation was announced recently for a decision in which the Special Master accepted a claim that vaccines led to ADEM in a child which resulted in PDD-NOS, an autism spectrum disorder. The same corporate media, in announcing that vaccines did not cause autism also ignored the Poling case in which government acknowledged that vaccines caused "autism like" symptoms (autism currently is diagnosed by symptoms there being no accepted biological test). As stated above, the mainstream media largely ignored the views of former NIH head Dr. Bernadine Healy, recent CDC head Dr. Julie Gerberding and Dr. Duane Alexander an NIH agency head that more research on vaccine autism issues could and should be done preferring instead to regurgitate pejorative descriptions of parents who describe their own first hand observations of their children's regression after vaccine treatment.

Autism reports in the mainstream media should be taken with a huge grain of salt not because of the existence of a conspiracy, although conspiracies a la Madoff and Enron do exist, but because of the widespread ignorance of many in the media and their increasingly ill informed, imbalanced, and unobjective journalism.

autism's gadfly, A Name Well Chosen, A Blog Worth Visiting

If you want to read a good "autism" blog check out autism's gadfly hosted by Jonathan Mitchell. He is truly a straight shooter who calls it the way he sees it. And doesn't mind, or maybe enjoys, challenging anyone's autism beliefs and opinions. Although Jonathan is an adult with autism he is not anti-cure and does not embrace the Neurodiversity/Autism Rights ideologies - the full title of his blog is "autism's gadfly I don't need no stinkin' neurodiversity"

I enjoy reading Jonathon's comments even though we disagree on many points, particularly ABA. As he puts it on his web site Jonathon is pro-cure, anti-neurodiversity, anti-special ed, anti-ABA. Not being a fan of the Neurodiversity/alleged Autism Rights Movement I enjoy the shots he takes at the leaders of those "movements" although I wince when he calls parents well intentioned but misguided for advocating for specific treatments, including ABA.

Good Morning America should do their viewers a favor and grant Jonathan the equal time he requested as an autistic person who does not share the Neurodiversity views advocated on their show by alleged Autism Rights advocate Ari Ne'eman. (Mr. Ne'eman was also accompanied by autism parent Kristina Chew who has embraced the sweet surrender of the anti-cure Neurodiversity movement.)

Not all autistic persons, even those who are high functioning, share Mr. Ne'eman's views. And not all agree with the heated rhetoric of Michelle Dawson. autism's gadfly is one that does not. His unique perspective is well worth reading.
