Versatile Sweet Dough

I came across this recipe awhile ago and liked it so much that I experimented with it in a few ways. What I like about this recipe is that it only involves 3 basic ingredients: butter, cream cheese and flour. This dough also lends itself well in sweet or savory applications too. Here are some ways I've experimented with the recipe and hopefully you'll give it a try - you won't be disappointed!

Versatile Sweet Dough
recipe adapted from AllRecipes

1 cup butter (2 sticks), softened at room temperature
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened at room temperature
2 cup sifted all-purpose flour

Combine the three ingredients in a bowl to form a soft dough. It's especially important that the butter and cream cheese is at room temperature so it's easy to incorporate with the flour.

Once you have your dough, you can form it into small balls and place in a mini muffin tin. You can then use your thumb to depress each dough ball so you have a little well to fill. Fill these tarts with your preferred fruit jam or preserves, a small piece of brie topped with jam, some savory cheese, etc and bake in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes until the edges of the tarts are golden brown.

Alternately, you can depress each dough ball and leave unfilled to bake, Once they're baked, you have these tart shells you can fill with whatever filling you'd like.

Another idea is to take a golf ball sized ball of dough and flatten it out into a circle. You can put some fresh berries, fruit preserves, cheeses or your preferred fillings on one side, then fold over the other side to create a small filled pocket. Seal the edges and bake in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes until the edges of the tarts are golden brown.
