ΣΤΟ ΠΕΡΙΠΟΥ

ΕΥΓΕΝΙΑ ΗΛΙΟΠΟΥΛΟΥ

Ο χειμώνας έφυγε , η άνοιξη έσκασε μύτη και εμείς ήμαστε στο περίπου. Μία βάζουμε χειμερινά μία κυκλοφορούμε με το φανελάκι. Έτοιμοι να υποδεχτούμε το θερμό καλοκαίρι. Παράλληλα βιώνουμε μία παράξενη κοινωνικοπολιτική κατάσταση. Κάτι στο περίπου. Λίγο πράσινο σοσιαλισμό με άφθονες δόσεις καπιταλιστικής γαλάζιας αλαζονίας. Πριν ή λίγο μετά από τα όρια αντοχής μας. Η χώρα περνάει μία οικονομικό-πιστωτική κρίση στο περίπου (χωρίς επακριβή υπολογισμό ή καθορισμό των δεικτών) και παρουσιάζει κάποιες στατιστικές στο περίπου. Εμάς ,που δεν ξέρουμε όλα τα στοιχεία του προβλήματος ,δεν μας μένει παρά να ζήσουμε στο περίπου. Πολλοί συνάνθρωποι μας θα επιβιώσουν στο περίπου αφού αντιμετωπίζουν σοβαρά οικονομικά προβλήματα που τους ωθούν στα όρια και μετά βίας βγάζουν τον μήνα. .
Ήμαστε ελεύθεροι πολίτες στο περίπου αλλά κάθε δύο και πέντε δεχόμαστε εντολές. Μερικές είναι καλοπροαίρετες (προσοχή στην δίαιτα) άλλες μας αφαιρούνε τις τελευταίες ελπίδες για αξιοπρέπεια (εξομοίωση όρων ηλικίας ανδρών και γυναικών, φορολόγηση της αποζημίωσης όταν σε απολύουν).
Η Ε.Ε που διαχειρίζεται στο περίπου τα προβλήματα του οίκου της νίπτει τας χείρας της και υπολογίζει κατά προσέγγιση το πώς θα διαβούμε την επόμενη δεκαετία. Ενώ πρέπει να δείξει υπευθυνότητα και αποφασιστικότητα δίνει μία λύση στο περίπου. Γνωρίζει πολύ καλά ότι η χώρα μας υπολείπεται σε ότι αφορά στο εποπτικό και ελεγκτικό μηχανισμό άρα αμφισβητεί τα πάντα. Η αναμνηστική φωτογραφία με τα υποκριτικά χαμόγελα των εκπροσώπων της για την υποτιθέμενη νίκη δεν πείθει κανέναν. Τζάμπα κοκορεύεται ο πρωθυπουργός μας .Όλοι ξέρουμε ότι σε λίγους μήνες θα χρειαστούμε καινούργια δανεικά και πάλι θα ΄΄ καταφέρουν΄΄ να μας το δώσουν με μεγαλύτερο επιτόκιο από τους φίλους μας τους γερμανούς.
Ήμαστε ισότιμα μέλη της Ε.Ε. ή μας έχουν στο περίπου; Ήμαστε η μόνη χώρα που αντιμετωπίζει προβλήματα λόγω οικονομικής κρίσης; Για τι εδώ και μήνες μας χλευάζουν και μας ειρωνεύονται; Ποιος τους έδωσε το δικαίωμα να συμπεριφέρονται σαν να ήμαστε ζητιάνοι; Για ποια ενότητα μιλάνε όταν μας ρίχνουν στο λάκκο με τα φίδια; Η ελληνογαλλική και γερμανική φιλία ήταν στο περίπου και αυτές; Μας κάνουν και ένα δώρο με την ευκαιρία της εθνικής μας γιορτής. Μας στέλνουν στο γείτονα Δ.Ν.Τ. εκεί θα μας λυγήσουν καλύτερα Η Ε.Ε. θυμίζει μία ανένδοτη, κακάσχημη γκουβερνάντα που αντί να χαϊδεύει και να συμμορφώνει ήπια τα παιδιά, όταν κλαίνε ,τα μαστιγώνει με το χάρακα δίνοντας τους εντολές με βρισιές. Τα τιμωρεί βάζοντας τα στην γωνία με τα γυμνά τους γόνατα πάνω σε τσόφλια καρυδιού. Εκεί,στην γωνία, θα μηδενιστούν όλες οι τάσεις ανεξαρτησίας και αυτοπροσδιορισμού της οικονομίας μας.
Μήπως φταίει και ο ταξιδιάρης πρωθυπουργός μας που , εδώ και μήνες, παρουσιάζει μία αλλιώτικη εικόνα της οικονομίας μας; Μία έχουμε το όπλο πάνω στο τραπέζι άλλη ήμαστε με χαμόγελα και ευχαριστημένοι που πέρασε το κακό. Τους παρουσίασε τα προβλήματα της χώρας μας στο περίπου; Πόσο μεγάλο είναι το έλλειμμα; Έχουμε ή δεν έχουμε λεφτά; Θα τα πάρουμε από τις εγχώριες τράπεζες ή θα βγούμε στην γύρα για δανεικά στην Γερμανία και με ποιους όρους θα τα πάρουμε; Μήπως θα έπρεπε και εμείς να τους φερθούμε στο περίπου; Να αποβάλουμε το παρακαλετό και την γονυπετής στάση ;

Η χρεωκοπία της χώρας είναι δεδομένη. Όχι γιατί την επιδιώκουν κάποιοι καταχθόνιοι και σκοτεινοί κερδοσκόποι, αλλά γιατί το κράτος και η οικονομία της χώρας δεν μπορεί πια να σηκώσει το βάρος της εξυπηρέτησης των δανείων. Αυτή είναι η αλήθεια που κρύβει συστηματικά η κυβέρνηση από τον ελληνικό λαό.
Ο κ. Παπανδρέου μιλώντας στη 8η Σύνοδο του Εθνικού Συμβουλίου του ΠΑΣΟΚ στις 20/3, διαβεβαίωνε: «Να είναι όλοι βέβαιοι, να είναι ακόμα πιο βέβαιοι οι διάφοροι καλοθελητές, που καθημερινά διαδίδουν ψευδείς ειδήσεις για τη χώρα μας, με προφανείς σκοπιμότητες: Η Ελλάδα δεν θα χρεοκοπήσει. Δεν θα την αφήσουμε να χρεοκοπήσει.» Η δήλωση αυτή μοιάζει εξαιρετικά με μια άλλη ιστορική δήλωση, του Ελευθερίου Βενιζέλου, όταν σε διάγγελμά του προς τον Ελληνικό λαό στις 27 Σεπτεμβρίου 1931, διαβεβαίωνε κι αυτός: «Δίδω προς τον ελληνικόν λαόν την προσωπική διαβεβαίωσιν, ότι έχω απόλυτον την πεποίθησιν ότι ημπορούμεν να διατηρήσουμεν την ακεραιότητα του εθνικού μας νομίσματος και να αποφύγωμεν επομένως τας συμφοράς που θα επακολούθουν την ανατροπήν της σταθεροποιήσεως.»
Την εποχή εκείνη είχαν ανακαλύψει μια άλλη νομισματική πανάκεια για τα οικονομικά προβλήματα της Ελλάδας, την οποία αντί για ευρώ ονόμαζαν χρυσή δραχμή. Για να στηριχθεί το «ισχυρό νόμισμα» της Ελλάδας που ήταν κλειδωμένο με την χρυσή Αγγλική λίρα, ξεπουλήθηκε κυριολεκτικά το σύμπαν. Όλες οι υποδομές της χώρας δόθηκαν σε ξένες εταιρείες (Ούλεν, Πάουερς, κλπ.) ενώ η χρυσή δραχμή χρηματοδοτήθηκε αδρά με πληθώρα δανείων.
Για να στηριχθεί η χρυσή δραχμή και το πρόγραμμα δημόσιου δανεισμού εφαρμόστηκε σκληρή λιτότητα με την κατάργηση κάθε κοινωνικής δαπάνης. Η μόνη κοινωνική πρόνοια που απέμεινε στη χώρα ήταν τα λαχεία και τα λαϊκά συσσίτια των φιλανθρωπικών σωματείων. Οι εφημερίδες της εποχής δημοσίευαν καθημερινά δεκάδες θανάτους από την πείνα. Το κράτος προκειμένου να συνεχίσει τη στήριξη της χρυσής δραχμής και να πληρώνει τα τοκοχρεωλύσια των δανείων του, έκλεινε τα δημόσια σχολεία, δημοτικά και γυμνάσια και απέλυε δασκάλους και καθηγητές. Το σύνολο των δημοσίων υπαλλήλων κλήθηκε να καταβάλει με τη βία έως και το 50% των αποδοχών του. Πολλοί απ’ αυτούς απολύθηκαν. Απαγορεύτηκε ο συνδικαλισμός στους δημοσίους υπαλλήλους και οι απεργίες στους εργάτες, ενώ οι διαδηλώσεις κηρύχθηκαν παράνομες.
Η Ελλάδα είχε τεθεί υπό διπλή κηδεμονία, όχι μόνο του Διεθνούς Οικονομικού Ελέγχου που είχε εγκατασταθεί ήδη από το 1898, ως αποτέλεσμα της χρεωκοπίας επί Τρικούπη το 1893 και του ελληνοτουρκικού πολέμου της ντροπής του 1897, αλλά και της Δημοσιονομικής Επιτροπής της Κοινωνίας των Εθνών, η οποία προκειμένου να προστατεύσει τα συμφέροντα των δανειστών της χώρας, απαιτούσε να χυθεί αίμα. Οι κυβερνήσεις της χώρας, ως τυφλά και πειθήνια όργανα της κηδεμονίας, εκτελούσαν με υπερβάλλοντα ζήλο τις έξωθεν εντολές. Το αποτέλεσμα μπορεί εύκολα να το φανταστεί κανείς. Λίγους μόνο μήνες μετά από τη διαβεβαίωση του Βενιζέλου η χρυσή δραχμή συντρίφτηκε και η χώρα κήρυξε επίσημα την χρεωκοπία της λόγω αδυναμίας αποπληρωμής των χρεών της. Με το χρεοστάσιο η χώρα παραδόθηκε στο έλεος των δανειστών της. Προκειμένου αυτοί να πάρουν τα λεφτά τους έφεραν ξανά στη χώρα το βασιλιά, που είχε εκδιωχθεί το 1922 και βοήθησαν να ανοίξει ο δρόμος για το φασιστικό καθεστώς της 4ης Αυγούστου του Μεταξά.
Όπως σήμερα, έτσι και τότε, οι λόγοι που οι πολιτικές δυνάμεις, οι οποίες έφεραν την ευθύνη για τη χρεωκοπία της χώρας, επικαλούνταν για να δικαιολογηθούν ήταν η «ατάσθαλος οικονομική πολιτική» του κράτους. Κι όπως σήμερα με το ευρώ, έτσι και τότε, κάθε σκέψη για εγκατάλειψη της χρυσής δραχμής ισοδυναμούσε με σεισμούς, λιμούς και καταποντισμούς. Μόνο που οι σεισμοί, λιμοί και καταποντισμοί ήρθαν από την προσπάθεια διάσωσης του «ισχυρού νομίσματος». Προκειμένου λοιπόν να διασωθεί το «ισχυρό νόμισμα» ας πέθαινε η χώρα και ο λαός της.
Μάλιστα, μέχρι και ειδικό ταμείο ιδρύθηκε το 1930 για την στήριξη της δραχμής, ανάλογο με αυτό του κ. Πετσάλνικου σήμερα. Το ταμείο αυτό οργάνωνε δεξιώσεις στα καλά σαλόνια των Αθηνών και καλούσε τις κυρίες του καλού κόσμου να δώσουν κοσμήματα και ότι άλλο πολύτιμο έχουν «δια την εθνικήν υπόθεσιν». Η εξέλιξη ήταν προβλέψιμη. Κάποιοι αετονύχηδες καταχράστηκαν το ταμείο, λίγο πριν κηρυχθεί το επίσημο χρεοστάσιο και κατέφυγαν σε χώρες της Λατινικής Αμερικής για να ζήσουν τη ζωή τους εις υγείαν των κορόιδων.

Η ιστορία επαναλαμβάνεται…

Ένα παρόμοιο σκηνικό βλέπουμε να στήνεται και σήμερα προκειμένου να παραδοθεί η χώρα και ο λαός της στο έλεος των δανειστών και των αγορών. Οι ίδιες λογικές, οι ίδιες δικαιολογίες, οι ίδιες πρακτικές, τα ίδια αποτελέσματα. Τι συνέβη όμως και βρεθήκαμε ξανά σαν χώρα σε κατάσταση χρεωκοπίας; Ο πίνακας που παραθέτουμε είναι αποκαλυπτικός. Σύμφωνα μ’ αυτόν οι πληρωμές για τα δάνεια που έχουν συνάψει οι κυβερνήσεις της χώρας εκτινάχθηκαν από 23,8 δις ευρώ το 2000 στα 84,2 δις ευρώ το 2009. Δηλαδή από το 17,4% του ΑΕΠ της χώρας το 2000, στο 35% του ΑΕΠ το 2009! Μπορεί να αντέξει αυτό το βάρος η οικονομία της χώρας; Και βέβαια όχι. Εδώ βρίσκεται το όλο πρόβλημα. Όταν η χώρα έχει φτάσει να ξοδεύει το 140% των εσόδων του κρατικού προϋπολογισμού σε εξυπηρέτηση του δανεισμού της, είναι προφανές ότι βρίσκεται σε κατάσταση χρεωκοπίας, είτε το θέλει, είτε δεν το θέλει, είτε το γνωρίζει, είτε όχι.
Που οφείλεται αυτός ο δανεισμός; Η συνηθισμένη δικαιολογία είναι το σπάταλο κράτος. Από τον πίνακα όμως βλέπουμε ότι η συμμετοχή των κρατικών ελλειμμάτων στο δημόσιο δανεισμό είναι ασήμαντη. Την τελευταία δεκαετία το ελληνικό δημόσιο πλήρωσε συνολικά σε εξυπηρέτηση δανείων πάνω από 450 δις ευρώ και δανείστηκε εκ νέου σχεδόν 486 δις ευρώ. Απ’ αυτόν τον νέο δανεισμό μόλις το 3,1% κατά μέσο όρο πήγε στην κάλυψη του δημοσιονομικού ελλείμματος. Όλα τα υπόλοιπα πήγαν στην αναχρηματοδότηση του δημόσιου χρέους.
Ακόμη και για το 2009, όπου το δημόσιο έλλειμμα έφτασε τα 17,1 δις, ο νέος δανεισμός του δημοσίου ξεπέρασε συνολικά τα 85,2 δις ευρώ. Με άλλα λόγια το δημόσιο έλλειμμα συνέβαλε στο νέο δανεισμό του δημοσίου μόνο κατά 20%. Επομένως, προς τι τα μέτρα και η λιτότητα για να περιοριστεί το δημόσιο έλλειμμα; Η αλήθεια είναι ότι όσο κι αν περιορισθεί το δημόσιο έλλειμμα, όσο κι αν σφίξουν το ζωνάρι οι δημόσιοι υπάλληλοι, όσο κι αν περιοριστούν οι κρατικές δαπάνες, όσους φόρους κι αν μαζέψουν οι εισπρακτικοί μηχανισμοί του κράτους, δεν πρόκειται να αναχαιτισθεί το δημόσιο χρέος. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι με βάση τις καλύτερες δυνατές προβλέψεις το δημόσιο χρέος της χώρας θα εκτιναχθεί έως το 2012 στα 350 δις ευρώ, δηλαδή στο 135% του ΑΕΠ. Πράγμα που σημαίνει ότι η ετήσια εξυπηρέτηση του δημόσιου χρέους θα αγγίξει ή και θα ξεπεράσει το 40% του ΑΕΠ. Κι όλα αυτά με την προϋπόθεση ότι όλα τα μέτρα της κυβέρνησης θα αποδώσουν τα αναμενόμενα. Πράγμα φυσικά πολύ αμφίβολο.
Γιατί η κυβέρνηση που διαρρηγνύει υποκριτικά τα ιμάτιά της για τους μισθούς και τις συντάξεις που πληρώνει το δημόσιο, δεν λέει κουβέντα για τον φόρο αίματος που πληρώνει η χώρα στους δανειστές της; Για λόγους σύγκρισης και μόνο, αξίζει να σημειώσουμε ότι το σύνολο των αμοιβών και συντάξεων που πληρώνει το κράτος στους δημόσιους υπαλλήλους ανήλθε το 2009 στα 25,5 δις ευρώ, δηλαδή στο 10,6% του ΑΕΠ της χώρας. Ολόκληρο το ποσό αυτό φτάνει μόλις στο 31% του συνόλου των εξόδων για την εξυπηρέτηση του δημόσιου δανεισμού τον ίδιο χρόνο. Τι περιμένει λοιπόν να αποκομίσει η κυβέρνηση από τη λιτότητα, εκτός από την εξουθένωση των εργαζομένων και της κοινωνίας;

Προς τα πού βαδίζουμε;

Για να καταλάβουμε τι σημαίνει η επιβάρυνση από την εξυπηρέτηση του χρέους και πόσο ανατροφοδοτεί την έξαρση του δημόσιου χρέους, αρκεί να πούμε το εξής: Την τελευταία δεκαετία (2000-2009) το ελληνικό δημόσιο πλήρωσε στους δανειστές του πάνω από 450 δις ευρώ. Παρ’ όλα αυτά το δημόσιο χρέος της χώρας όχι μόνο δεν συγκρατήθηκε, αλλά αυξήθηκε την ίδια δεκαετία σχεδόν 155 δις ευρώ! Ενώ τα επόμενα δύο χρόνια, με τις καλύτερες δυνατές προβλέψεις, το ελληνικό δημόσιο θα κληθεί να πληρώσει συνολικά πάνω από 180 δις ευρώ για εξυπηρέτηση ενός διαρκώς αυξανόμενου χρέους. Πώς είναι δυνατό να συνεχιστεί αυτή αιμορραγία χωρίς να οδηγηθεί η χώρα στη διάλυση και η κοινωνία στην ανέχεια;
Αυτός είναι ο λόγος που δεν μπορεί να υπάρξει άλλη πολιτική, αν δεν αντιμετωπιστεί πρώτα απ’ όλα ο βρόγχος του δανεισμού και δεν ξεφύγει η χώρα από τη θανάσιμη λαβή που της έχουν εφαρμόσει οι δανειστές της με την συνεπικουρία της Ε.Ε. Όσο για το ποιος φταίει για την κατάσταση, δεν έχει παρά να κοιτάξει κανείς τα ελλείμματα στην παραγωγή, το εμπορικό ισοζύγιο, αλλά και την τεράστια διαφυγή κεφαλαίων στο εξωτερικό. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι στα τέλη του 2009 (με βάση τα τελευταία διαθέσιμα στοιχεία του ΔΝΤ) έχουν βγει από την Ελλάδα πάνω από 200 δις δολ. που έχουν τοποθετηθεί σε κάθε είδους κερδοσκοπία (μετοχές, ομόλογα, παράγωγα, κλπ.) του εξωτερικού! Ποιοι τα έβγαλαν από την Ελλάδα; Οι δημόσιοι υπάλληλοι; Κι από πού βγήκαν αυτά; Προφανώς από τη λεηλασία της χώρας, από τα υπερκέρδη των μονοπωλίων, των καρτέλ και των τραστ, που φρόντισαν να διογκώσουν με τις πολιτικές των ιδιωτικοποιήσεων, των ανοιχτών αγορών και της απορρύθμισης όλες οι κυβερνήσεις.
Μάλιστα, σύμφωνα με την Τράπεζα Διεθνών Διακανονισμών, στα τέλη του 2009 υπήρχαν ως καταθέσεις κατοίκων της Ελλάδας σε τράπεζες του εξωτερικού 15 δις ευρώ. Αναλογικά με το οικονομικό μέγεθος της χώρας, η Ελλάδα είναι μια από τις χώρες με τις περισσότερες καταθέσεις κατοίκων της σε τράπεζες του εξωτερικού. Οι ιδιοκτήτες αυτών των λογαριασμών δεν είναι περισσότεροι από 3.000. Αν είχαμε την ευκαιρία να ακτινοσκοπήσουμε τους λογαριασμούς αυτούς θα ανακαλύπταμε την αφρόκρεμα του επιχειρηματικού και πολιτικού κόσμου της χώρας. Πρόκειται για μια οικονομική και πολιτική ολιγαρχία που δεν της καίγεται καρφί για το τι θα απογίνει η χώρα.
Όταν μιλάμε για κέρδη και υπερκέρδη, αρκεί να πούμε ότι σύμφωνα με τους National Accounts της Eurostat, σε κάθε 1000 ευρώ νέα προϊόντα και υπηρεσίες (δηλαδή προστιθέμενη αξία) που παρήγαγε ετήσια η ελληνική οικονομία την τελευταία δεκαετία, τα 560 ευρώ μετατράπηκαν σε επιχειρηματικό κέρδος και μόλις τα 350 σε αποζημίωση των εργαζομένων. Στην ΕΕ η αντίστοιχη κατανομή είναι 360 υπέρ του επιχειρηματικού κέρδους και 550 υπέρ της εργασίας! Η Ελλάδα κατέχει την υψηλότερη θέση μέσα στην ΕΕ ως προς το μερίδιο του προϊόντος της που νέμεται το επιχειρηματικό κέρδος, το οποίο το 2008 (για το οποίο διαθέτουμε στοιχεία) έφτασε στο ύψος ρεκόρ του 59,5%. Πίσω της ακολουθεί η Βουλγαρία, η Ουγγαρία, η Τσεχία, η Ιρλανδία, κοκ.
Το ελληνικό κράτος υπήρξε εξ ιδρύσεώς του σπάταλο, διεφθαρμένο και βαθύτατα παρασιτικό. Κι αυτό γιατί οικοδομήθηκε για να εξυπηρετήσει μια οικονομική και πολιτική ολιγαρχία, η οποία το αξιοποίησε για να λεηλατήσει τη χώρα και το λαό της. Ο δανεισμός ήταν εξυπαρχής ένας από τους πιο προσοδοφόρους τρόπους για να χρηματοδοτηθεί αυτή η λεηλασία. Έτσι προέκυψαν και οι απανωτές χρεοκοπίες του ελληνικού κράτους. Υπολογίζεται ότι από τα 170 χρόνια του επίσημου ελληνικού κράτους έως το τέλος του 20ου αιώνα, η χώρα βρέθηκε σε κατάσταση πτώχευσης στα 50 από αυτά. Η τελευταία επίσημη πτώχευση ήταν αυτή του 1932. Και τότε ο λαός ήξερε πολύ καλά ότι οι κυβερνήτες της χώρας που την οδήγησαν στην χρεωκοπία δεν ήταν τίποτε περισσότερο από ένα σώμα πολιτικών «επαγγελματιών επιδιωκόντων ατομικά συμφέροντα και εξαγοραζομένων υπό των διαφόρων αναδόχων εταιριών, της δωροδοκίας διενεργουμένης δια του εις το Χρηματιστήριον διεξαγομένου παιγνιδίου, όπερ πράκτορες καθωδήγουν εκ των διαδρόμων της βουλής», όπως έγραφε εκείνη την εποχή ο επιφανής ιστορικός Π. Καρολίδης.
Σήμερα βαδίζουμε ολοταχώς προς μια νέα επίσημη πτώχευση. Κι αυτό γιατί φαίνεται αδιανόητο στην κυβέρνηση της χώρας, όπως έγινε και σε ανάλογες εποχές παλιότερα, να αμφισβητήσει την εξάρτηση της χώρας από τους δανειστές και τις διεθνείς αγορές. Φαίνεται αδιανόητο στην κυβέρνηση να προτάξει το συμφέρον της χώρας και του λαού της, έναντι των συμφερόντων των αγορών, των τραπεζών και των ισχυρών της ΕΕ. Κι έτσι όλοι μαζί έχουν δρομολογήσει για τη χώρα μια ακόμη καταστροφική πτώχευση. Το βασικό πρόβλημα της κυβέρνησης είναι το πώς θα τεθεί η χώρα υπό κηδεμονία προκειμένου οι διεθνείς τοκογλύφοι και οι αγορές να κατασχέσουν και να δημεύσουν ότι μπορούν. Οι συζητήσεις στην ΕΕ, οι κινήσεις της κυβέρνησης και τα πακέτα των μέτρων, αφορούν στην προετοιμασία του εδάφους και στην τελική μορφή που θα πάρει η επίσημη μετατροπή της χώρας σε αποικία του διεθνούς χρηματιστικού κεφαλαίου. Αυτό θα γίνει υπό την κηδεμονία της ΕΕ, του ΔΝΤ, ή ενός συνδυασμού και των δύο; Θα γίνει με το ευρώ, με την επιστροφή σ’ ένα ελεγχόμενο και πληθωριστικό εθνικό νόμισμα, ή με την επιβολή διπλού νομίσματος; Όλα αυτά δεν είναι παρά λεπτομέρειες που υπηρετούν την ίδια βασική κατεύθυνση, την ίδια πορεία προς την επίσημη πτώχευση και δήμευση της χώρας.

Renewed Calls for a Real National Autism Strategy

Canada does not have a real national autism strategy but it is not for lack of trying by some dedicated federal politicians  including  Liberal  Senator Jim Munson and  NDP MPs Glenn Thibeault and Peter Stoffer who     have renewed calls for a real National Autism Strategy for Canada.

The struggle for a National Autism Strategy began many years ago including here in New Brunswick where Andy Scott issued a public call for a National Autism Strategy on October 18 2003:

""Fredericton MP Andy Scott said Saturday he has been lobbying prime- minister-to-be Paul Martin for a federal program to help young children with autism. "I desperately want a national autism strategy - and let me just assure you that Paul Martin knows it," Mr. Scott told supporters at a party celebrating his 10th anniversary as an MP in Fredericton Saturday evening.

Early work by therapists with young autistic children, Mr. Scott said, can make a big difference in their capacity to lead fulfilling lives as adults - and can save money in the long run. But the costs of starting such early intervention programs are high and should be borne directly by Ottawa rather than each individual province, he said. "We have responses and therapies and so on that I genuinely believe can work," he said. "You're going to save millions of dollars over the lifetime of an autistic adult. If you can get in at the front end, you can make enormous progress.

"But it's very expensive, and there's not a lot of stuff being added to Medicare, generally - that's why we have catastrophic drug problems and other things," he said. "In the province of New Brunswick, P.E.I., or even Quebec or Ontario it's very, very expensive. The feds are going to have to step up to the plate." "

Mr. Scott was successful in getting a commitment by the federal government to a National Autism Strategy recognized in principle but the strategy at that time did not commit to the hard action necessary to provide assistance to all parts of Canada in providing early autism intervention programs.  Even the National Autism Symposium which came out of that commitment was a sham, pure and simple, a sham.  Public autism advocates, including me were excluded from the Symposium.  Those in attendance were all screened by federal health agency involved with organizing the event to ensure that they would go along with the government's do nothing to help autistic children agenda.

Senator Munson has been literally crossing the country for several years fighting for a real national autism strategy  and he has not given up on his efforts.  He organized and  spoke in Ottawa yesterday at an event to mark World Autism Awareness Day this Friday, April 2, 2010:

“There’s no reason why we cannot treat autism within our own communities equitably across the nation,” said event organizer Senator Jim Munson. “There is a crisis and I know that we can come up with a plan to deal with the issue that is so important to all of us.”

The event was also co-hosted by  NDP MP's Glenn Thibeault and Peter Stoffer who spoke at the event.  Mr. Thibeault also  introduced a private member's bill, seconded by tireless autism advocate Peter Stoffer,  to create a real national autism strategy, one that would actually help autistic children and their families by having the federal government work with the provinces:

"“Autism doesn’t discriminate based on geography.  It’s time for federal leadership to ensure that no matter where a child is born with autism, they receive equal treatment and services of the highest caliber.”

Ari Ne'eman Opposes Freedom of Choice of Persons with Autism Disorders and Their Families

Ari Ne'eman, and all of those persons who oppose research aimed at finding treatments and cures for autism  disorders,  oppose the right of choice of autistic persons and their families.  Mr. Ne'eman and his supporters oppose the right of other autistic persons to seek to be cured of their autism disorders.   

In Mr. Ne'eman's case he has clearly stated that HE does not want to be cured of his Aspergers Disorder and I respect that right as I am sure everyone does who is involved in debates about his disability council appointment.  Unfortunately Mr. Ne'eman takes it a step too far and asserts that not only does he not want to be cured but other persons with autism disorders do not want to be cured, should not be cured and should not have the option and right to choose not to be cured.  

When Mr. Ne'eman says to his many high profile media contacts that WE do not want to be cured he purports to represent all persons with autism disorders, even those much more severely affected by autism than he is, which is almost everyone with an autism spectrum disorder.  He has no such authority to speak on their behalf.  When he makes such statements he is attempting to prevent the research from being done that  is necessary to finding treatments and cures for autism disorders thus hoping to deprive autistic persons and their families of the option and the right to choose to be cured.

When he protests parent driven organizations seeking to raise funds for research aimed at curing autism disorders Mr. Ne'eman is again seeking to prevent that research and to deprive other persons with autism disorders of their right to choose not to be cured.  When he describes as morally reprehensible, as he has done, efforts to cure autism disorders, Mr. Ne'eman, the high functioning university student with Aspergers is trying to deprive other persons with autism disorders, or parents rightfully acting on their behalf, of the option and right to choose to be cured of their autism disorders.

Mr. Ne'eman does not respect the rights of other autistic persons to choose to be cured, to overcome the limitations of their autism disorders. He does not respect the right of parents acting on behalf of their autistic children, some with severe Autistic Disorder, to overcome those deficits through treatment and cure. 

When it comes to cure oriented autism research Mr. Ne'eman seeks to deny to other persons with autism disorders the same freedom of choice ... to be cured or not ... that he asserts on his own behalf.

I am astonished and disappointed that US President Obama, who I greatly admire for so many other reasons, would appoint to an important disability council position a person who opposes the right of choice of other persons with autism disorders and the parents who often, by necessity and by law, act on their behalf.

I KNEAD ME SOME LOVE AND COMFORT


Seven months have past since my brother left us and I am still stunned. As his birthday approaches, thoughts of him rush through my brain, memories of a big brother always there, a childhood and more full of adventures, highlights of my life. Lately summer visits to our grandparents’ house in Albany have been swirling around in my head, memories of badminton in the tiny backyard among Grandpa’s rose bushes, having to sneak into the upstairs neighbors’ apartment, terrified of being caught yet goaded on by my brother, to rescue a birdie that had strayed onto their balcony; forbidden trips down into the dusty, cobweb-draped basement, sunlight barely filtering through grimy windows, boxes piled high, spilling their jumble of treasures out onto the dirt floor, unlabeled bottles filled with mystery lining the stone walls, ghosts waiting around each corner, the musty, damp odor with me still; sneaking armloads of marshmallows and candy bars, contraband goods, into the tiny bedroom we shared, daring and exhilarating in our boldness, knowing that we would have to eat them in the dark, a nighttime picnic, so the parents and grandparents wouldn’t see light seeping out through the crack under the door, but then, in our excitement, tripping – him or I it is hard to remember – and our sweet treasure flying, forbidden fruit rolling under the beds and into deep, dark corners and spending the rest of the night on our hands and knees searching for our loot. Barbecues at cousin Sandra’s, eating clams for the first time followed by popsicles of chocolate and cherry under the brilliant burst of 4th of July fireworks. Ice cream trucks and real New York bagels and lox. Memories filled with laughter, lots of laughter.


And life goes on. My baby is leaving home this week, spreading his wings and happily leaving the nest, flying off to New Orleans. I know he’ll be doing great work, volunteering to help rebuild neighborhoods destroyed by Katrina, but he’s still my baby and he’ll be too far away. What will I do? #1 son is still at home but will be no consolation, sentimentality not his strong suit where mom is concerned, and he is so involved with his own life: working, working, working, excelling at school, he has also started a company on the side and already has several clients, has become, at the ripe old age of 21, a powerhouse, a bundle of energy and JP and I are thankful that it has finally arrived!


All this hot on the heels of a milestone birthday that also has me quite stunned – How in the world did I get this old? What happened to all those years? - I have been trying to deal with so many life-changing events. Sometimes I feel down, sometimes I feel the weight of the bad things in life, the unfairness, the swiftness of time passing. But sometimes we have to push all that aside, wrap it up in a box and bury it deep in the ground, and reach for something else, something different and exciting or something reassuring and motivating. Changes in life can lead to changes in goals, changes in mindset, changes tout court. And that is where I am now, what I am working on. Trying to readjust my blog to adapt to my new goals, preparing for Food Blogger Connect in June where I will be speaking about my passion: writing.


Things have changed in my life, but there are some constants, certain things that I turn to again and again, those things that keep me grounded and give me comfort and succor in times of stress like a child’s favorite security blanket. Walks with JP, Marty dancing happily alongside us, dashing in and out between our legs. Eating homemade pizza with my men in front of a movie on TV, chick flick or horror movie or, better yet, some crazy wild guffaw-inducing comedy made only to entertain. And baking. Stirring, blending, whipping, kneading, the slow, constant movement, the physical force behind each stroke, each push and fold and turn, the silky, luxurious coolness of cake batter as it flows in ribbons from my whisk, or the satin smoothness of dough, voluptuous like flesh as I press my hands into the gorgeous heft of a mound of dough, the bite of the yeast as it tickles my nostrils, the earthy goodness of salty Parmesan cheese raining down through my fingers urging me to bring some up to my lips and taste. Yes, things of the earth, of the body, these things always center me and I can focus on my senses, each texture, each scent, the sounds around me, the birds outside, the silence of the house, the occasional sigh of a dog in his dreamless sleep. Kneading dough, watching as it silently rises before my eyes, I watch and see it even though it tries to sneak quietly unnoticed. I punch off a bit of the raw dough and taste the subtle bitterness of uncooked yeast mixed with the saltiness of the cheese like earth and sea. And all, once again, is calm.

PARMESAN DINNER ROLLS
Based on a recipe found in The King Arthur Flour Baker’s Companion.

4 ½ tsps (13.8 g) instant dry yeast
½ cup (125 ml) warm water (body temperature)
1 tsp sugar
½ cup (60 g) flour
1 cup (250 ml) lukewarm milk
¼ cup/4 Tbs (60 g) unsalted butter softened to room temperature
1 tsp salt
1/3 cup (65 g) sugar
1 large egg, beaten until well blended
4 to 5 cups (500 to 625 g) flour
7 oz (200 g) freshly and finely grated Parmesan cheese

Topping:
2 Tbs (30 g) butter, melted
¼ cup breadcrumbs, homemade is preferable!
¼ cup grated finely grated Parmesan (for this I used packaged which is finer)
1 Tbs dried oregano
1 egg yolk beaten with 1 Tbs cold water (save that egg white for your macarons)

In a large mixing bowl, combine the instant dry yeast, the 1 tsp sugar and the ½ cup flour. Add the warm water and stir briefly with a fork just to make sure that all of the dry ingredients are moistened. Leave to activate, about 15 or 20 minutes until frothy and bubbly and it seems to have grown a bit.


Now add the lukewarm milk, the softened butter, the salt, sugar and beaten egg and stir just to combine. Now begin adding and stirring in the flour and the grated Parmesan until you have the cheese and 4 cups of the flour has been added and a dough is forming: all the dry ingredients are moistened and it is all starting to pull together into a ball. Add a bit more flour if it is too wet.

Scrape out onto a floured work surface and knead for 6 minutes or so, kneading in as much of the remaining cup of flour as necessary until you have a soft, smooth, elastic dough.

Place the dough in a clean, lightly oiled bowl, turning the dough to coat in oil, and cover with plastic wrap and a kitchen towel and allow to rest for 30 minutes. The dough will have risen though not doubled.


Scrape the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and press down. Divide into 16 pieces for large dinner rolls, up to 32 pieces for small buns and gently shape into rounds. Lightly butter the bottom and side of a 9 x 13-inch (22 x 33 cm) baking pan and place the rolls in the pan leaving about 1 inch (2.5 cm) between the rolls. Cover once again with the plastic wrap and towel and let sit and rise for about 30 minutes until doubled. They will now be touching.


Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Gently heat and melt the butter for the topping. Blend the breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan in a small bowl and stir in the melted butter until you have a crumble. Brush the tops of the rolls with the egg wash then generously sprinkle the tops of the buns with the crumble, pressing the crumble on to stay.


Bake the rolls for 20 to 40 minutes depending on the size of the rolls and your oven. The rolls should be very puffed up and fluffy and the top should be a deep golden brown. If you think that the tops of the buns are browning too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil until they are done.

Obama Disability Nominee Ne'eman Says Curing Autism Disorders is Morally Reprehensible

The Autism Action Network has called for its American readers to contact their Senators to voice their opposition to US President Obama's disability council nominee Ari Ne'eman. I wish them success although from what I understand the nomination is unlikely to be disturbed.  This Canadian father of a severely autistic son  is very disappointed that Mr. Ne'eman will ultimately be approved and will be in a position to influence autism policies in the US and consequently around the world.  

I have followed with great interest the US Health Care debate and President Obama's historic struggle to bring health care to all Americans.  I am perplexed that the great US health care president would, at the same time, appoint  to an important disability council  a very high functioning person with Aspergers who does not believe that autism is a medical disability or disorder and  is opposed to curing autism spectrum disorders.  

Mr. Ari Ne'eman does not view autism disorders as disorders in a medical sense  notwithstanding his own medical diagnosis of Aspergers Disorder.  Nor does he restrict himself to  rejecting a cure for himself, or for other very high functioning persons with Aspergers Disorder.  He tells the world that all autistic persons do not want to be cured.  

The Autism Action Network has gathered a number of Mr. Ne'eman's more outrageous and offensive statements:

"June 10, 2008 on Good Morning America, Neeman said, "We do not think to aim for a cure is the right approach to take."

 

December 10, 2009 interview with the CBC, "Autism is currently viewed as a disease of the medical model---Something to be cured or eliminated. That doesn't reflect how we view ourselves, that doesn't reflect our realities."

 

In his essay Equality Demands Responsibility, 2006, Ne'eman wrote, "But if we are to demand equal legitimacy, if we are to assert that a 'cure' is not only unnecessary and undesirable but morally reprehensible, then we must accept for ourselves equal responsibilities.""

This very high functioning gentleman does not seem troubled by his Aspergers disorder but there are many low functioning persons with severe Autistic Disorder who do suffer. Some never survive to the age of 12, the age at which Mr. Ne'eman apparently received his Aspergers diagnosis. Some are lost forever in local traffic, neighborhood pools or snow storms. Some require intensive therapy to prevent dangerous self injurious behavior.  Some live their lives in institutional and residential facilities  dependent on the care of strangers.  The young university student with  a very mild variety of Aspergers disorder opposes curing those with more severe, restrictive types of autistic disorders and purports, with no common experience and no legitimacy,  to speak on their behalf.

Mr. Ne'eman speaks about "our" views, "our" realities, how "we" view "ourselves".  My son has an Autistic Disorder diagnosis, assessed with profound developmental delays. He is severely autistic.  Mr. Ne'eman the high functioning young university student with Aspergers, and the abilities to interact regularly with the New Yorker magazine, the NYT and Canada's CBC AND negotiate socially in Washington DC political circles  does not know how my son thinks or views himself. Mr. Ne'eman does not have any knowledge whatsoever of my severely autistic son's realities.  When he claims to speak on behalf of all persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders he is misrepresenting himself, and autism disorders, to the world.

Personally, I find Mr. Ne'eman's opposition to curing the autism disorders that afflict so many children and adults to be morally reprehensible and I am very disappointed in US President Obama for appointing him to a position from which he can influence the lives of so many persons with autism disorders.

Bon Voyage Chicago... Our Third Baby Shower!

What a day! Today my brother hosted a special Baby Shower/Bon Voyage party for Louis and me so we had a chance to see our What's Cookin, Chicago friends once last time before we moved. It was a great turnout and I loved that we were able to spend some time catching up with everyone that attended.


My brother really out did himself because the day before, him and his friends (along with Louis) moved us out of our apartment and into the house in the suburbs. It was a tiring and long day for all of us, to say the least. And today, John set up the shower and really was a great host to our friends. For the shower, my brother initially wanted to do a big blow out luau but given how tiring the weekend was with our move, John had to rely on convenience. Here's what he served up for the party...

I loved how he encouraged friends to bring in a children's book to help build Joel's library... and we're looking forward to reading all the wonderful books we received as well as talking about the special people who gave the books as gifts.

On top of the children's books, John also encouraged folks to bring a package of diapers and/or diaper wipes for a raffle. Those that brought some in received $25 gift certificates to local restaurants around the city. It was a great way to help us prepare for all those upcoming diaper changings - lol!

We also received some wonderful gifts from our friends but even more than that, we really treasured the time we spent with each of them catching up. We're all looking forward to Joel's arrival and it means so much to have wonderful friends and family celebrate with us! I'm waiting for more pics that were taken, which I'll upload once received!

Homemade Caesar Salad

I am a huge fan of Caesar Salads.  When hubby had a restaurant I think that I lived on the Caesar salad that was topped with blackened shrimp.  Since the restaurant has gone I have desperately been in search of a Caesar Salad fix.  This has been going on for about 8 years…:(

Then the other night we were watching TV and there seemed to be nothing on.  Turned on the Food Network and started watching “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” and Alex was talking about her favorite Caesar Salad from a Steakhouse somewhere.  Can’t really remember all the details because I was totally and one hundred percent lost once I saw the tableside Caesar being made.  At that moment I just knew it had been way too long since I had had a perfect Caesar.

 

Homemade Caesar Salad

Ingredients:

1/2 head of chopped romaine lettuce
1 egg yolk (the egg is raw, I like to use cage free, hormone free and antibiotic free eggs when I am eating them raw)
ground pepper to taste
1/2 tsp dry mustard powder
2 tsp chopped anchovy
2 tsp garlic, minced
1/2 tsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
1/4 cup Parmesan Cheese, grated
1-1/2 tsp fresh squeezed lemon juice

Directions:

1. Clean lettuce thoroughly and dry in a salad spinner or in towels. Refrigerate until crisp, at least 1 hour or more.
2. In a jar combine egg yolk, pepper, mustard, anchovy, garlic, olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and 2 Tbsp of the Parmesan cheese. Whisk until well blended.
3. To assemble, place torn lettuce leaves in a large bowl. Pour dressing over the top and toss until well coated. Add the remaining Parmesan cheese.  Serve immediately!

This Caesar Salad was perfect.  Lots of garlic and lemon.  Just the way I like it!  Hubby loves his with some bacon added in.  Tailor this to your taste but definitely try it!

New York Times Glosses Over Anti-Cure, Anti-Family Positions of Obama Disability Nominee Ari Ne'eman

I do not pretend to be a fan of the New York Times  autism coverage but I acknowledge that its article on Obama disability nominee Ari Ne'eman gets it ... about  half right and for that  this humble autism dad awards the NYT a D-  grade.   I must admit that  the NYT made a better effort than usual in  providing some semblance of objective balance before telling parents what autism is all about in Nominee to Disability Council Is Lightning Rod for Dispute on Views of Autism.  But the NYT still fails to demonstrate actual knowledge of an important autism research issue and fails to acknowledge the biggest issue of all ... the right and responsibility of parents to represent the interests of their children;  not some stranger with no professional expertise and little in common with their children.

The NYT does gently acknowledge, while down playing it somewhat,  that Mr. Ne'eman is a high functioning young university student of obvious intelligence and  excellent communication  and organizational abilities unlike many of the severely autistic children and adults on whose behalf he claims to speak.  He can, unlike  severely autistic persons like my son, operate smoothly  in the worlds of  high powered Washington politics and  the ultra influential New York media . What the NYT fails to fully address is the fact that Mr. Ne'eman purports to speak on behalf of other people's children and that he does not show respect for the role of parents in raising, caring for,  and representing the best interests of their children..... unless of course they agree with his views of what is best for their own children.  

The NYT also presents Mr. Ne'emans simplistic and erroneous views about autism research.  It is true that most autism research is genetically oriented.  Public health authorities that influence autism research funding decisions have insisted on genetically based autism research for more than a decade as described by Teresa Binstock who called that mindset the "It's Gotta Be Genetic" model of autism.  What the article misses by quoting Mr. Ne'eman's views of autism research is the growing push for environmentally based autism research and for treatments and cures other than termination of  "high autism risk" pregnancies.

Dr. Jon Poling, neurologist,  is one of  the most famous and well informed parents who has advocated for exploring environmental causes of autism ... and for seeking treatment and cures.  His comments in the Atlanta Journal Constitution present a much more complete and informed views of the direction that autism research should go than the narrow perspective offered by Mr. Ne'eman and the NYT:

We should be investing our research dollars into discovering environmental factors that we can change, not more poorly targeted genetic studies that offer no hope of early intervention. Pesticides, mercury, aluminum, several drugs, dietary factors, infectious agents and yes — vaccines — are all in the research agenda.

The NYT cites Mr. Ne'eman's reduction of autism research to research aimed at  pre-natal detection of autism that could lead to early terminations of pregnancies in cases of suspected autism.  Mr. Ne'eman may honestly believe that parents and others seeking causes and cures for autism are so narrowly focused but it is inexcusable for the New York Times to present that view without providing more information about autism research to the public.  Without getting into the views of different camps in the autism wars the NYT could at least have told its readers around  the world about the IACC's strategic autism research plans readily available on line at:

The 2010 Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee Strategic Plan for Autism Spectrum Disorder Research - January 19, 2010

The introduction to the IACC strategic plan states:

It is imperative that resources be devoted to research commensurate with the public health need. Specifically, we need research that deepens our understanding of ASD, including the complex genetic and environmental factors that play a role in its causation; development of improved ASD diagnostic approaches and treatments; and science to enhance the level of services and supports available to people with ASD, their families and caregivers. With current scientific knowledge and tools, we have unprecedented potential for discoveries that will improve the quality of life for people with ASD.

When Mr. Ne'eman tells the world that WE don't want to be cured he purports to speak on behalf of  all persons with autism disorders including the severely disabled. When Mr. Ne'eman protests a video by parents describing autism from their perspectives as parents of severely autistic children he is opposing their right to speak on behalf of their children. When he protests Autism Speaks he is opposing efforts to increase autism awareness and raise funds for autism research goals supported by many parents and families with autistic loved ones.

Hopefully some day the NYT will have an epiphany and come to understand that Mr. Ne'eman opposes the right and responsibility of parents of children with autism disorders to seek treatment and cure for their own children.  He is obstructing their efforts to give their children the best, fullest lives they can.  

Hopefully someday the NYT will come to realize its own role in promoting such efforts to interfere with and obstruct the efforts of families trying to help their own autistic children.

Cold Snap Doesn't Stop Conor's Saturday Morning Superstore Adventure

Conor, Mom and Dad often head out for a walk along the trail to the Superstore early Saturday morning just to stretch the legs, get some fresh air and pick up some essentials. This morning was one of our colder mornings in a while with the official temperature at -13 Celsius and -21 with a wind chill. We were walking into the wind along the river trail heading to the Superstore but we were dressed for it. Conor didn't mind the cold too much as long as he didn't have to wait too often for old Dad to catch up.
