Childhood Favorites... Reinvented

Tonight, friends and I got together for a 'Moveable Feast' dinner event. Our friends, Jen and Wayne hosted this fun potluck dinner with the school season in mind. We all have some favorite childhood dishes... do you have one? How would you reinvent them for adult palates? Many of us brought dishes reflective of our childhood in some way including...

Bacon & Cheese Quiche
Jen brought this dish to the table because growing up, she would often have bacon and eggs with her family. This is her take on combining these two ingredients in a dish she enjoys as an adult.
Filipino Empanadas
Pamela brought these Filipino Empanadas to share. Growing up, her family didn't do much baking. To get their favorite baked goods, they would visit a local bakery. One of her family favorites to order at the bakery would be empanadas like this, which is filled with chicken, potatoes, and spices. (Tasting these even brought me back to my childhood!)

Spam Appetizers
Wally and Meg brought these appetizers which combined both of their childhoods. Wally's parents were always fond of Spam and in honor of them, he used Spam to make these mini kabobs. Meg added to the kabobs by adding chunks of fresh pineapple. When she was young, her family would prepare ham with pineapple... and with Spam, pineapple is actually really good!
Sloppy Joe Bites
This is Ruby's spin on a popular childhood school cafeteria lunch, sloppy joes. Instead of making them as many kids enjoy them, she baked croissant dough, topped with a sloppy joe mixture and shredded cheese. These bites were quite addicting and I don't think there were many leftover...

Turkey Cordon Bleu Croquettes
Louis loves chicken nuggets when he was young and even now as an adult. This is a twist on chicken nuggets where ground turkey and diced ham are formed into a meatball, but snuggled inside of each is a pocket of swiss cheese. Once fried to a golden brown, they're served with a garlic mustard dipping sauce.

S'mores Brownies
When Wayne was in the Boy Scouts, he and his dad would often make brownies together - a favorite dessert of his. He also loved to camp as a kid so this dessert he shared combines his fond memories of baking brownies with his dad and camping out with marshmallows on the fire.

Pumpkin Bread Pudding
I brought this dessert to share since bread pudding is a special dessert of my childhood. After school, I'd play at my friend's house and every time I was over, her mom would have bread pudding baking up. Just before going home, we'd all sit down and enjoy the freshly baked bread pudding. I used pumpkin for this version as a sneak peak to fall flavors.

To accompany this feast of our childhoods, Jen prepared this fruity salad and a refreshing sangria, a more grown up 'fruit punch'!
