Ποιός λαός και ποιό κοινοβούλιο αποφάσισε τα πλεονάσματα του Βορρά νάναι ελλειμματα του Νότου;

Η Γερμανία αποφασίζει για την πρωτοκαθεδρία της.

Η πρόσφατη απόφαση του Συνταγματικού Δικαστηρίου της Γερμανίας ως προς τα ασφαλιστικά μέτρα, επέτρεψε στη Γερμανία, πρώτον, τη συμμετοχή της στον Μηχανισμό Σταθεροποίησης (ΜΣ). Θυμίζω ότι αυτός φτιάχτηκε μετά από δική της πρόταση και σύμφωνα με τις απαιτήσεις της. Δεύτερον, ανέθεσε στο Γερμανικό κοινοβούλιο την απόφαση για κάθε μελλοντική αύξηση των κεφαλαίων συμμετοχής της Γερμανίας στον μηχανισμό. Τρίτον, αποφάσισε ότι η γερμανική βουλή δικαιούται να έχει συνεχή πληροφόρηση από το μηχανισμό. Και αυτό, παρά το γεγονός ότι το ιδρυτικό του μηχανισμού προβλέπει δεσμευτικά ότι η διοίκηση και οι υπάλληλοι του, δεν θα παρέχουν πληροφόρηση σε πρόσωπο ή θεσμό εκτός του μηχανισμού. Τέλος το Συνταγματικό Δικαστήριο απεφάσισε ότι θα εξετάσει στην κύρια δίκη, τον Οκτώβριο τις δράσεις της Ευρωπαϊκής Κεντρικής Τράπεζας. Μάλιστα, χαρακτήρισε τις αγορές κρατικών ομολόγων που πράττει η τελευταία, ιδιαίτερα εκείνες στη δευτερογενή αγορά, ως παράνομες. Με άλλα λόγια πιθανό να ανακαλέσει τον μοναδικό συμβιβασμό που αναγκάστηκε να κάνει η Μέρκελ στο Ευρωπαϊκό Συμβούλιο. Σημαντικοί γερμανοί συνταγματολόγοι προβλέπουν ότι η απόφαση στην τακτική δίκη θα προτρέπει τη Γερμανία σε προσφυγή στο Δικαστήριο της ΕΕ ενάντια της ΕΚΤ!

Η πρόσφατη απόφαση του Γερμανικού Δικαστηρίου παραβιάζει ποικιλότροπα τις Συνθήκες και αναβαθμίζει τον ρόλο των θεσμών της Γερμανίας σε βάρος των αντίστοιχων θεσμών των υπόλοιπων κρατών της Ευρωζώνης, καθώς και εκείνων της ΕΕ. Καθιστά τους γερμανικούς θεσμούς

«τελικό κριτή» των αποφάσεων των θεσμών της Ένωσης, ακόμα και της τυπικής ανεξάρτητης ΕΚΤ. Η κύρια αλλαγή που επέρχεται είναι ότι οι γερμανικοί θεσμοί, καθίστανται μέσω των αποφάσεων του δικού της συνταγματικού δικαστηρίου ο τελικός κριτής και επιλογέας των ευρωπαϊκών αποφάσεων, ιδιαίτερα όσων αναφέρονται ευθέως στην κρίση.

Η πορεία των πραγμάτων είναι σαφής. Αρχικά η Γερμανία επιβάλλει την αδιαφανή και αντιδημοκρατική λειτουργία της διεύθυνσης του μηχανισμού σταθερότητας. Μακριά από τον έλεγχο των κοινοβουλίων και της κοινής γνώμης. Διασφαλίζει ότι πολλά εθνικά κοινοβούλια και άλλοι εθνικοί θεσμοί δεν θα έχουν δικαίωμα παρέμβασης στη λειτουργία της διεύθυνσης του μηχανισμού, ενώ οι υπουργοί μέλη της τελευταίας δεν θα λογοδοτούν στα κράτη τους. Αφού δέσμευσε η Γερμανία τους πάντες σε μια λειτουργία του μηχανισμού χωρίς δημοκρατία, κατόπιν αυτοεξαιρέθηκε. Θέτει, πλέον, οποιαδήποτε απόφαση του μηχανισμού υπό την του θεσμικού της συστήματος.

Ανεξάρτητα από το γεγονός ότι όλα τα πιο πάνω γίνονται στο όνομα της εσωτερικής έννομης τάξης της ίδιας της Γερμανίας το γεγονός παραμένει ότι η Γερμανία συγκροτεί έναν μηχανισμό που δεσμεύει την έννομη τάξη των κρατών μελών της Ευρωζώνης, αλλά κατόπιν, και εκ των υστέρων, εξαιρεί τον εαυτό της. Με αυτό τον τρόπο αποκτά ιδιαίτερα δικαιώματα και γίνεται ο τελικός και ανώτατος κριτής των αποφάσεων σειράς θεσμών στην Ενωση. Θέτει, δηλαδή, τους εθνικούς θεσμούς της υπεράνω των άλλων κρατών καθώς και της ίδιας της Ένωσης. Αποδίδει στον εαυτό της ειδικά δικαιώματα και αρμοδιότητες.

«δημοκρατική λειτουργία» των θεσμών της Γερμανίας χρειάζεται να υπογραμμιστεί ότι, πρώτον, προκειμένου να συμβεί αυτό, αδειάζονται από δικαιώματα εποπτείας, ενημέρωσης και συναπόφασης τα περισσότερα άλλα κοινοβούλια στην Ευρωζώνη.

Δεύτερον, ότι τίθενται οι εθνικοί θεσμοί της Γερμανίας υπεράνω εκείνων της ΕΕ. Τέλος, τρίτον, θυμίζω ότι στην εποχή της βρετανικής αυτοκρατορίας, όσα περισσότερα δικαιώματα χάναν οι θεσμοί των αποικιών, τόσο πιο «δημοκρατικά» λειτουργούσε το βρετανικό κοινοβούλιο. Κατά συνέπεια, «ουδέν νεώτερο από το γερμανικό μέτωπο».

Michigan Daily Promotes Harmful, Irrational ASAN Anti-Cure Ideology

In Autism as an identity, not a disease Michigan Daily editor Jennifer Xu  pushes the harmful Neurodiversity ideology that autism is not a disease or a disorder but an identity that should be embraced and promoted.  This self promoting ideology in fact is used to interfere with and obstruct efforts by parents seeking treatment and cure for their child's autism disorders.  Ms Xu and the Michigan Daily have, with this lengthy, one sided, article misrepresented autism disorders, particularly severe autistic disorders and the impairment they inflict on the children and adults who suffer from them.

"Autism as an identity, not a disease" features very high functioning university English professor Melanie Yergeau who serves on the board of directors of the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network, an organization composed of very high people on the autistic spectrum who promote Neurodiversity perspectives which present autism as a variation not a disorder. Ms Xu does not meaningfully present the other side of the argument by referring to the great number of persons with autism disorders, most diagnosed as children (unlike either Ms Yergeau or her founding ASAN member Ari Ne'eman whose "autism" symptoms were so mild as to escape attention until their college or adult years) for whom the challenges of autism disorders are much more serious than those faced by Ms Yergeau. 

Many children, like my son diagnosed 14 years ago at age 2, were diagnosed early because their symptoms were severe and obvious. Unlike Ms Yergeau or Mr. Ne'eman autism is very serious for most of these children and will include cognitive challenges, limited communication verbal or otherwise, self injurious behaviors and lives spent in residential care of one level or another. For Ms. Yergeau, Mr. Ne'eman and their fellow ASAN Board of Director members autism may be just an identity to be embraced. If it is not actually a disorder for them, if it does not actually limit their daily functioning or prevent them from becoming professors, corporate directors, media celebrities or otherwise impair their lives why then did they accept a medical disorder diagnosis of autism or Asperger's in the first place. 

Parents fighting to help their severely autistic children face many obstacles. One of the most obnoxious of such obstacles is the harmful ideology of ASAN Directors and other very high functioning autistic persons who feel the need to own the medical label which they embrace while telling the world it is not in fact a medical disorder. Not content to seek awareness of their specific high functioning autism realities they pretend to speak on behalf of others, including other peoples children, who are much more severely affected than they. They make public efforts to interfere with the efforts of parents seeking cure and treatment for their own severely autistic children. 

The Michigan Daily's benevolent portrayal of this harmful Neurodiversity ideology is shameful, irresponsible journalism.

A Real Canadian Autism Hero - Stefan Marinoiu

Stefan Marinoiu is not a federal or provincial political figure, or an entertainment celebrity of any kind talking endlessly about raising autism awareness without taking any action to help the 1 in 88 Canadians who suffer from autism disorders.  Stefan is a real Canadian autism hero.  He has made courageous efforts to have our federal government address Canada's autism crisis. 

Stefan has raised autism awareness without the benefit of political or media connections. He has not done so in order to obtain free travel to Banff or the UN or to augment a political career, he has done it to help his son, Simon,  and  others with autism disorders.  He has done it by twice putting his life at risk with a mid winter walk :autism" trek from Toronto to Ottawa and with a  hunger strike.  I was very pleased to meet Stefan and his wonderful family in Toronto.  Stefan did not confine his efforts to simply raising the awareness as happens with so many much less challenging efforts. Stefan actually advocated for  our federal government to get involved in a meaningful serious way to address Canada's autism crisis.   

Unfortunately the Stephen Harper-Mike Lake government does not want to acknowledge or deal with Canada's autism crisis and there will be no federal progress in Canada as long as the Harper version of the Conservative government holds majority control. Not a single member of our Harper Conservative government, not even those with family members affected by autism, have bothered to push for meaningful federal efforts to address Canada's autism crisis. I doubt though that Stefan will give up.  I will try to follow Stefan's example and continue efforts to advocate for meaningful efforts by our federal government to address Canada's autism crisis.  

Those of us who believe that our federal government should offer meaningful assistance to the 1 in 88 Canadians with an autism disorder have to look past the Harper era and look to NDP and/or Liberal governments to address Canada's national autism crisis.  We can't  give up in the face of Harper's indifference, we must keep fighting and refuse to give up.

BlackFinn American Grille - Review

Now that I've been settling into the suburbs nicely from living in the urban jungle of Chicago, I've been loving the suburban life more and more each day. Don't get me wrong - the city is awesome for all it has to offer, but I guess the suburban girl in me will always think of the suburbs as home. There's a constant debate between suburbs vs city when it comes to restaurants. Sure, the city has every cuisine and food imaginable, but that's not to say you can't find a good meal in the suburbs. The Baron and I share an appreciation for independent restaurants, especially in the suburbs. We also can appreciate some smaller chains every now and then. In fact, we recently were invited to a complimentary dinner to check out BlackFinn American Grille restaurant. There are currently four restaurants around the country with locations in Houston, TX; Jacksonville, FL; St. Louis, MO; and the restaurant we visited in Mt. Prospect; IL. There are 3 more restaurants opening soon in Merrifield, VA; Austin, TX; and Chicago, IL.

The restaurant is divided into two main areas - dining room and saloon/bar. When we arrived, we were seated immediately in the dining room. It was nicely decorated with colorful artwork along the walls with the lighting dimmed to set the mood. Overall, it was a great atmosphere with a lot of people dining on a Friday night. When our server came, we started off with some drinks... The Baron ordered a Crispin hard cider and I got a glass of Mirrasou

For our appetizer course, I was intrigued by the Blackened Brie. This is just a small wheel of brie that has been charred on the outside, resulting in a creamy melted center. It was served with ciabatta toast, sliced apples and an apricot cranberry chutney. Since I couldn't do the toast, the server brought over some corn tortilla chips for me to enjoy it with, which I really appreciated.

Next up was our entree course. The Baron and I were on the same wavelength, as usual. We couldn't decide between 2 steak entrees that caught our eye, that we ended up ordering both to split. The Herbed Rubbed Campfire Steak, which is a dry herb rubbed 16 oz ribeye served with garlic mashed potatoes and maple glazed carrots, was delicious. The Baron ended up with that plate and it was cooked perfectly to the medium rare he requested. I got the Steak Frites American, which is a 12 oz New York strip steak kissed with a cilantro butter, served with broiled blue cheese crusted tomatoes atop a small mixed salad and a side of truffle fries. Just like The Baron's steak, mine was cooked perfectly as well to medium. The tomatoes were also good {with a little gluten due to the light breadcrumb topping} and are also served as a separate side on their menu. The fries were delicious as well, with just a hint of truffle salt. Both entrees were very good sized portions for the price and I thought the service in ensuring our steaks were done to our liking was great.

With two courses down, it would be a shame not to make room for dessert! Our server mentioned their signature dessert was their BlackFinn Hot Chocolate. From the name, you would think it was a special drink... but no, think again. I've mentioned in the past that The Baron and I have a thing for peanut butter and chocolate. This dish catered to that flavor combination in the most indulgent way. The BlackFinn Hot Chocolate is a fallen chocolate and peanut butter soufflé served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, fresh whipped cream and a caramel sauce drizzle.Are you drooling yet?  It wasn't gluten free but the server did say it had a small amount of flour in it. I took my chances and thankfully it didn't bother me much afterwards. This was definitely delicious and it was a huge portion I couldn't finish it all. I want to recreate this as a GF version... it was that good!

Aside from peanut butter and chocolate, The Baron's favorite dessert by far is Key Lime Pie. The minute the server mentioned this, I knew we had to order it. It was a beautiful presentation and The Baron enjoyed it. It had a classic graham cracker crust, fresh lime custard, whipped cream, and raspberry sauce garnish. It's hard to mess up a traditional and BlackFinn nailed it.

Overall, our dinner experience at BlackFinn American Grille was excellent. From the moment we stepped in and escorted to our table, throughout our entire meal and as we left the restaurant, it was evident that the restaurant was doing well with plenty of patrons coming in, enjoying the food and drinks and everything the establishment has to offer. With a few of these restaurants around the country, I encourage yo to check them out and try their menu. You won't be disappointed! The Baron and I would definitely come back again. Thank you to the staff and everyone at BlackFinn American Grille in Mt. Prospect, IL. You did an outstanding job and we appreciate the time and effort you all put forth to make it a great night for us!

Dear Honourable Ministers: Conor Has Voted Again for Flexible, Meaningful Inclusion, Alternative Learning Arrangements

Conor, anxious to get to Leo Hayes High School, to the resource center with other challenged kids for socialization, and to his individual learning area for his ABA based instruction, watches the clock this morning. Conor votes YES for flexible inclusion with meaningful access to learning.

Minutes before departure Conor, on his own initiative, brings Dad his sneakers to make sure I don't forget to drive him to school on time.

Dear Honourable Ministers:

I am forwarding the above composite picture of my son Conor, seated in the kitchen watching the clock at 7:30 am this morning.  Conor, now 16 years old, has severe Autistic Disorder and is assessed with profound developmental delays.  He was not placed on a "time out" chair for having behaved badly.  He was sitting there of his own choice because he was, as he is every day, anxious to get to school at Leo Hayes High School, an experience he truly loves and one which he misses during the summer months.  

I encouraged Conor to engage in other activities instead of just sitting on the chair and he did so. At precisely 7:55 though Conor, again on his own initiative, brought me a pair of my sneakers and handed them to me,  as a polite reminder to Dad to get ready to take him to school. To the far left of the picture is a red object. It is his school back pack including his lunch pack which he packs the night before and placed in the fridge.  In the morning, on his own initiative, he places the lunch pack inside the back pack and places them near the exit door to ensure that it is with him when Dad drives him to school in the morning.  

With these actions Conor indicates clearly what a positive experience his flexible inclusive education at Leo Hayes HS is for him.  Conor does not, at our request receive his instruction in a regular classroom. Some autistic children can prosper in a regular classroom and some, like Conor, require instruction outside the regular classroom in a quieter space where he is not overwhelmed by noise and other distractions. 

Conor started his schooling in a regular classroom and came home every day with self inflicted bite marks  on his hands and wrists. (self injurious behavior is a recognized condition commonly associated with autism disorders). Once removed the biting ceased and Conor received his instruction in an individualized area in grade school, middle school and high school.  His instruction has been provided by education assistants/teacher aides trained at the excellent UNB-CEL Autism Intervention Training program.  

Conor's socialization has NOT been impaired by these arrangements.  Throughout school he has, in consultation with us, his parents, been involved in various outings and activities within his abilities including some specified gym activities, swimming (his favorite), outings like apple picking (another favorite) and last year he even attended a play put on at Fredericton's playhouse. Other students have ALWAYS greeted Conor warmly at every level of school. Some have even sought him out at our home in order to say hello to him outside of school. At Tim Horton restaurants Conor has been greeted by staff who are were students at school and knew him through Best Buddies. I underline these facts because it is important to realize that full regular mainstream inclusion is NOT necessary to ensure a full social learning experience for children with severe challenges like my son.  

One of the greatest socialization assets for Conor has been the Resource Center at the Leo Hayes High School. The RC is well staffed with trained experienced personnel that know how to manage children with extra needs in as stress free a manner as possible.  It also provides a variety of tools and sharing of information directly by people who are actually working directly with challenged children.  Stigmatization does not occur by placing challenged children in a resource center for parts of the day.  Stigmatization and outright harm occurs by pretending that all children regardless of cognitive level and regardless of disability based sensory and behavioral challenges,  must receive instruction in the same area as their chronological "peers". 

I have made these statements again on Conor's behalf, as I have made them throughout his education because of the constant threat posed to the flexible mode of inclusion that has benefited him in his education. The ideologically based every child in the regular classroom model to which this current administration and its most trusted advisers subscribe would be detrimental and harmful to my son if inflicted upon him, if his ABA based learning in an alternative area or if his socialization, security and happiness in the Leo Hayes High School are targeted for elimination.

Conor demonstrates the success of the current flexible model of inclusion, of the ABA instruction he has received outside the regular classroom, of the security and opportunity for socialization that the Leo Hayes High School Resource Center provides.  Please do not ignore Conor's story while making decisions affecting his future and the future of other children who need accommodation outside the regular classroom.

Although I am a lawyer by profession I try to avoid making legal arguments in education discussion since they can unfortunately lead to confrontation when cooperation and understanding are so badly needed to ensure proper education and development of children.  Having said that I will provide you, with respect, to two links to documents summarizing leading precedents in Canadian jurisdiction concerning the need meaningful access to education of children with disabilities written by Yude Henteleff QC a distinguished lawyer and Order of Canada member who has represented many disability organizations in Canada. Without getting too detailed I believe these documents can be summarized by saying that case law has established that an ideological insistence on regular classroom placement of all children regardless of disability considerations, and without providing alternative arrangements to accommodate their disability based challenges can constitute unlawful discrimination:

1. The Fully Inclusive Classroom Is Only One of the Right Ways to Meet the Best Interests of the Special Needs Child.  (2004) Yude M. Henteleff 

2. MEANINGFUL ACCESS, INCLUDING THE PROVISION OF A WIDE RANGE OF PLACEMENTS, AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF INCLUSIVITY IN EDUCATION by Yude M. Henteleff C.M., Q.C., LL.D. (Hon.) (2012)

I would ask you foremost though to simply look at these pictures of Conor and take my word as his parent, as a long time autism advocate and representative of the Autism Society New Brunswick during the MacKay and Ministerial Committee inclusive education reviews (and current acting ASNB President). Not all children, and certainly not ALL autistic children function well in the regular classroom.   The ASNB position that children should be educated in a manner consistent with an evidence based determination of their best interests is consisted with the policies of the Canadian Learning Disabilities Association. It is also consistent with the first section of the PNB definition of Inclusive Education that resulted from the Ministerial Committee review of inclusive education:

"Inclusive Education

I. Vision

An evolving and systemic model of inclusive education where all children reach their full learning potential and decisions are based on the individual needs of the student and  founded on evidence." (underlining added - HLD)

I ask both of you Honourable Ministers to be faithful to the above definition of inclusive education fashioned after years of consultation conducted by Ministers of the Lord and Graham governments and examined the evidence of my son and other children with needs that require education outside the regular classroom.  Please continue the option for individualized education outside the regular classroom for those like my son who require that arrangement.  And please do not eliminate valuable, proven resources like the Leo Hayes High School Resource Center that have contributed so much in the way of socialization, security and friendship for my son and others with similar needs.

Chicken Salad. Simple, homey, banal old chicken salad. White bread, or toast if you are feeling audacious, a smear of mayo, a slice of tomato, one single lettuce leaf and a scoop of chicken salad. Nothing more American than chicken salad for lunch. Or tuna salad, come to think of it, but tuna is particular in its bold, distinctive, fishy flavor, often hard to please. There are only so many ways that tuna salad can be prepared, only so many ingredients that marry well with the assertive fishiness. But something about chicken is universal; its very blandness is the perfect backdrop, a tabula rasa for anything. As Laurie Colwin stated, it is so adaptable.

One can say that chicken salad’s very essence is American. Start with the chicken itself, poached or roasted, simple and tender, a blank page; chop it, mince it, shred it, precise, clean and elegant, or rough, frayed, ever so scraggy and casual. A spoonful or three of mayonnaise, of course, cool, velvety, rich and then, really, it can take on any personality at all. Slivers of sun-dried tomatoes, the sharp tang of mustard or vinegar, the salty pull of olives, the smoky masculinity of bacon or ham, the bite of your favorite pickle. Give it the hot, spicy kick of Tabasco or the gentle sweetness of grapes or pears, the crunch of apples or walnuts. Or bring in your own cultural touch, your very own personal taste: toss in curry, garam masala, chickpeas and coriander for an Indian twist; chunks of feta, cubes of ripe tomatoes, onions and dark, glistening, slippery, tangy olives for something reminiscent of the Greek Isles; Chinese, Italian, Russian, Irish, pull up something from your favorite cuisine or your own family roots, chicken salad is the Melting Pot of food.

My father baked. Choux, delicate and ethereal, filled with thick, creamy pudding; larger-than-life sheet cakes, perfectly marbled chocolate and vanilla; mile-high pies then topped with mounds of sweet, snowy whipped topping. My father loved to spend time in the kitchen, concentrating on stirring, pouring, simmering, his eyes absolutely twinkling with delight. Weekends would find him whipping up a batch of pancake batter, always for dinner, never for breakfast; by the time we kids straggled out of bed and stumbled into the kitchen, dad would already be out in the yard mowing the scrappy patches of hard, tough Florida lawn clinging mightily to the Florida sand, digging up his poor little plot of a garden or have his head deep under the hood of a car. I often wax nostalgic about the hours I would spend, mesmerized, watching my father whip up a baked good or blend handfuls of dried fruits to create an ambrosial, sweet, shimmering compote. I inherited many qualities from him, and the passion for baking must be one of them.

But he did so much more than bake. He loved being in the kitchen. Weekends he would toss steaks or burgers on the grill when he wasn’t flipping pancakes on the griddle. And his hoagies! How we loved his hoagies! He would bake loaves of frozen, buttery garlic bread, split each one open, spread on the mayonnaise, and with the precision, exactitude and fastidiousness of the engineer that he was, he would layer and mound paper thin slices of cold cuts, salamis and cheeses, top with a row of tomato slices, lettuce leaves and, his secret ingredient, his final touch, a drizzle of Italian salad dressing. Ah, hoagie night.

And he made all of the salads. He was the king of salads. Tuna and chicken salads, chopped liver, whatever you please. His chicken salad was thick and creamy, dotted with bits of carrots and celery for color and crunch, maybe an onion finely minced, salted and peppered and it needed nothing more than that to be turned into a perfect sandwich. We were plain, simple folk with a taste for something that simply said American comfort food, a meal that simply said home.

Now I am all grown up and have so many worlds, cultures and cuisines at my fingertips. That bowl of cooked, chopped chicken takes on many forms, so many different personalities depending upon the season, the weather and my mood. Often, I will fill my shopping cart or market basket with an array of condiments, flavors and textures that will bring a new chicken salad to life, to be packed for a picnic, served up for lunch or eaten at a buffet. But as we delve deeper and deeper into apartment renovations, as my time is sucked into a black hole…. No, no. As my time is taken up by painting and polishing parquet and making design decisions, I have less and less time to devote to cooking. Shopping is done on the run, cooking is now a thrown together affair, a “let’s dig through the cupboard and fridge” kind of smorgasbord event as we collapse in front of the television for the evening. Yet as I dashed to the market yesterday to pick up cheeses and baguette and fruit, whatever to make a quick, impromptu meal or two, chicken salad crossed my mind. I haven’t thought of chicken salad in years. I bought tomatoes, an avocado and a tiny bouquet of pearl onions and ran home. And I was on my way.

Tonight’s version of chicken salad is made up of what I had on had: mayonnaise, mustard and red wine vinegar for a creamy dressing with a slight bite and a slight tang. Slivered spring or pearl salad onions, chunks of avocado as well as a couple of minced hardboiled eggs and a cupful of cooked white beans for both added nutritional value and consistency. From there, toss in a handful of fresh coriander, chunks of feta, slivers of sundried tomatoes or sliced pickles. Or a handful of olives. I make mine rather plain and serve the extras on the side so each diner can create his own perfect flavor combination. And dad’s spirit hung over us, glided in and out of the kitchen and livingroom as we dined on the perfect American buffet, comfort food to soother body and soul after a long day of renovations. Serve with fresh bread, tossed salad, a cheese platter, a bowl of fruit and a bottle of light, fruity white wine. Yes, please.

I have decided to add to my menu chocolate cake. I have taken Abby Dodge’s fabulous Emergency Blender Chocolate Cupcakes from The Weekend Baker (a cookbook that I highly recommend to beginner and experienced bakers alike) and turned them into tiny Bundt cakes to serve simply (what else?) dusted with powdered sugar. Feel free to serve them with a scoop of your favourite ice cream, whipped cream or my Chocolate Whipped Cream or Coffee Whipped Cream.

NOTA BENE: A home baker can never have enough easy, quick, one-bowl cake recipes. Why use a boxed mix when you can have a homemade, from-scratch cake with barely more time, energy or trouble? Here are a few of my own personal favorites:

CHICKEN SALAD

This is the basic version, then add to it what you will. This serves about 4 people, American, French or whoever happens to be in your home and hungry, as part of a luncheon or light dinner spread.


2 large chicken breasts
2 – 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth or stock, enough to cover the breasts
3.5 oz (100 g) smoked lardons cubes (I use Matchstick) or bacon
2 – 4 large eggs
5 or more Tbs mayonnaise, homemade or excellent quality jarred
1 – 2 Tbs mustard, to taste
1 – 2 tsps red wine vinegar, to taste
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 can cooked white beans, rinsed
1 ripe avocado, peeled and cubed
Spring or pearl salad onions, trimmed of the green and the white part thinly sliced
1 small or medium-sized carrot, trimmed and cleaned (peeled or scraped)
1 – 2 cups cherry tomatoes, rinsed and halved, optional

Pat the chicken breasts with paper towelling and trim off any excess pockets of fat. Place the breasts in a pot of simmering chicken or vegetable stock or broth (homemade, canned or from a stock cube is fine) and allow to simmer until cooked through (the center went sliced open should no longer be pink). This takes about 10 minutes, more or less depending upon the thickness of the breasts. Remove from the stock and allow to cool.

Hardboil 2 to 4 eggs, allow to cool, peel and rinse. Fry the lardons or bacon in a dry skillet until crispy. If use bacon, crumble or cut into matchsticks. Allow to cool.

When cooled, chop or mince. When the chicken has cooled, chop, cube, mince, shred or slice the cooked chicken and place in a medium or large mixing bowl. Grate the carrot into the bowl – I use the largest holes of the grater. Add the lardons or bacon, the thinly sliced onion and the minced hardboiled eggs. Whisk the 5 tablespoons of the mayonnaise with 1 tablespoon of the mustard and taste. Add more mayonnaise or mustard to taste. Whisk in 1 teaspoon of the red wine vinegar. Fold into the chicken salad. Salt and pepper.

Gently fold the rinsed and drained white beans and the avocado chunks. Add the cherry tomatoes and anything else you choose to add (pickle slices, slivers of sundried tomatoes, pitted olives, fresh herbs, seedless grapes, pear or apple chunks, coarsely chopped pecans or walnuts, etc.) and fold together.

Now taste to adjust seasonings: add more mustard, half a tablespoon at a time, or more vinegar, 1 teaspoon at a time, salt and pepper until desired taste is attained.

Serve immediately at room temperature or keep covered with plastic wrap and chilled in the refrigerator until ready to serve and eat.

ABBY’S ONE-BOWL CHOCOLATE CUPCAKES
Or mini Bundts

Abby uses a blender to prepare this batter – whizzing all of the dry ingredients together and then adding the wet ingredients and whizzing to combine. I do it the old fashioned way, with a whisk. I only change I made was adding ground cinnamon. All dry ingredients should be lightly spooned into the measuring cup and leveled with a knife blade.

Nota Bene: What I particularly love about chocolate cakes like this is that one can add a hint of any favorite flavoring one desires: add a tablespoon of Grand Marnier, Cointreau or Amaretto; add 2 teaspoons of dry, powdered espresso powder or replace some of the hot water with strong prepared coffee; add the grated zest of an orange or a lemon or a splash of orange or another fruit juice, measuring the liquid as part of the ¾ cup hot water. Add a pinch of another spice that pairs well with chocolate, such as a gingerbread, pumpkin or apple pie spice. Just for a few suggestions.

1 cup (130 g) flour
½ cup (45 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
½ tsp baking soda
¼ tsp salt
½ tsp ground cinnamon, optional
¾ cup (175 ml) hot water
½ cup (120 ml) vegetable oil
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) – I set my very unpredictable and overly hot oven to 185°C. Line 12 regular-size muffin cups with paper liners or butter and flour 12 individual mini Bundt cups (the easiest way to butter mini Bundt cups is with softened or just-melted butter and a soft pastry brush. Dust with flour and turn over the sink and shake/tap out all excess flour)

Combine the flour, cocoa powder (I sift the cocoa powder into the bowl), sugar, baking soda, salt and ground cinnamon into a large mixing bowl. Whisk in the water, then the oil, egg and vanilla until smooth and blended.

Pour into the prepared muffin or mini Bundt cups – I scrape the liquid batter into a large measuring cup with a lip/spout which makes the job of pouring into muffin tins easier and cleaner. Divide the batter evenly among the cups.

Bake until a tester inserted in the center of one of the cupcakes or Bundlets comes out clean; the top of one cake should spring back when lightly pressed and the edges of the Bundlets should be starting to pull away from the tin. Remive the pan from the oven onto a cooling rack and allow to cool for about 10 minutes before carefully popping out the cupcakes or mini Bundts. Allow to cool completely before serving.

Blueberry Swirl Muffins

I love pastries with my morning coffee. But when you're gluten free, it's not as simple as stopping by a bakery, picking something up and enjoy. I've found a new love in baking when I took on a gluten free lifestyle... and this fall I'm completely exercising my baking bug to the fullest extent possible. One of my favorite muffins is  the classic blueberry muffin. I still have a stash of summer blueberries I picked in my freezer so I've been playing with different blueberry muffin recipes lately. My recent one were these Blueberry Swirl Muffins. Aside from having plump blueberries in every bite, the added swirl of Lemon Blueberry Jam on the top makes it even more delicious. Sweet with a hint of tartness, a tender crumb and a slightly crunchy topping, this is one muffin I know you'll enjoy with your morning tea or coffee...

When non-gluten free friends compliment on a GF baked good and can't tell that it's GF to begin with, that's when I know it's good. I made these over the past weekend for me and Joel to enjoy and we loved them. When I gave some to friends, I got compliments that they couldn't tell the difference between them and a non-GF muffin elsewhere. The Baron even noted they were really good days later, so they held up and kept great texture without getting dry or crumbly - something typical with many GF muffin recipes I've previously tried. So if you have a stash of blueberries lurking in your freezer from the summer, here's another recipe to use them in. Feel free to substitute with other berries or even chopped apples for something more seasonal!

Blueberry Swirl Muffins Adapted from Cook's Illustrated Cookbook

Lemon Blueberry Jam 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour {or 350 grams gluten free flour blend} 21/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 2 large eggs 1 cup granulated sugar 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled 4 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract or vanilla paste 1 cup buttermilk  1 cup fresh blueberries Preheat oven to 425F. Line muffin pan with liners and set aside. In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder and salt together in large bowl.  Set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar. Add cooled, melted butter, oil, vanilla, and buttermilk.  Add egg mixture and continue to whisk till well combined.  Fold wet mixture into flour mixture with a spoon or spatula. Continue to fold in blueberries. Mix lightly and leave the batter slightly lumpy.  Divide batter evenly among the muffin liners/ Spoon about 1 tsp. of jam onto tops of standard muffins.  Swirl the jam into the muffins using a skewer or chopstick into figure eight motion.  Sprinkle each muffin with turbinado sugar. Bake muffins in the preheated oven for 16-19 minutes, or until the tops are set and toothpick inserted near center returns with just a few crumbs.  Cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to rack to finish cooling.

Η κρίση των στεγαστικών δανείων, στην οποία οφείλεται η καταιγίδα στον χρηματοπιστωτικό τομέα, είχε στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες μια απρόσμενη εξέλιξη, με την υπαγωγή των Freddie Mac και Fannie Mae υπό τον έλεγχο του κράτους. Οι δύο αυτοί οργανισμοί -χαρακτηριστικά παραδείγματα του χρηματοοικονομικού παραλογισμού - κάλυπταν το 45% όλων των αμερικανικών στεγαστικών δανείων. Οι αποφάσεις πρέπει να έχουν ληφθεί έως το βράδυ της Κυριακής, πριν από το άνοιγμα των ασιατικών χρηματιστηρίων. Αλλά και το αμέσως προηγούμενο Σαββατοκύριακο ήταν επίσης πλούσιο σε εκπλήξεις : Την Κυριακή 7 Σεπτεμβρίου, έπειτα από μία εβδομάδα στην οποία κυριάρχησε η είσοδος στο προσκήνιο της Σάρα Πέιλιν, της κυβερνήτριας της Αλάσκα και απρόσμενης υποψήφιας του Ρεπουμπλικανικού Κόμματος για την αντιπροεδρία, ο Χένρι Πόλσον, ο αμερικανός υπουργός Οικονομικών, ανήγγειλε ότι τέθηκαν υπό τον έλεγχο του κράτους οι δύο γίγαντες των ενυπόθηκων δανείων, η Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) και οι τράπεζες Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac).

Η ιδιωτικοποίηση του οργανισμού, ο οποίος στη συνέχεια μετονομάστηκε σε Fannie Mae, δεν οφειλόταν κατά κύριο λόγο σε ιδεολογικές απόψεις για την οικονομία. Η αποστολή των αδελφών Fannie Mae και Freddie Mac συνίστατο στο να προσφέρουν ρευστότητα στην αγορά της στεγαστικής πίστης, είτε εγγυώμενες τα δάνεια, είτε αγοράζοντάς τα από τις άλλες τράπεζες. Ταυτόχρονα, τα αμερικανικά νοικοκυριά ενθαρρύνονταν να δανειστούν, καθώς είχε θεσπιστεί η έκπτωση των τόκων των στεγαστικών δανείων από το φορολογητέο εισόδημα των δανειοληπτών.

Η Fannie Mae και η Freddie Mac χρηματοδοτούσαν τις δραστηριότητές τους με την έκδοση τίτλων που ήταν γνωστοί ως Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities (RMBS). Οι επενδυτές από την πλευρά τους τις προτιμούσαν, δεδομένου ότι η αμερικανική κυβέρνηση τους προσέφερε την -έμμεση- εγγύησή της. Αν και ο κύκλος εργασιών των δύο εταιρειών αυξανόταν κάθε χρόνο με ταχύ ρυθμό, εκτινάχθηκε στα ύψη όσο προχωρούσε η απορύθμιση του χρηματοοικονομικού συστήματος στις ΗΠΑ.

Το 1990 και οι δύο μαζί κατείχαν πιστώσεις αξίας 740 δισ. δολαρίων. Το ποσό έφτασε τα 1,25 τρισεκατομμύρια το 1995, ξεπέρασε τα 2 τρισ. το 1999 και τα 4 τρισ. το 2005. Την παραμονή της κρατικοποίησής τους, μάλιστα, το χαρτοφυλάκιό τους ανερχόταν στα 5,4 τρισ. (3,8 τρισ. ευρώ). Δηλαδή έφθανε στο 45% του ενεργητικού των στεγαστικών δανείων στις ΗΠΑ. Εξάλλου, οι δύο εταιρείες στήριζαν το 97% των τίτλων που ήταν δομημένοι πάνω σε ενυπόθηκα δάνεια. Η ραγδαία αύξηση που περιγράψαμε οφειλόταν τόσο στη φούσκα των ακινήτων της περιόδου 2001-2006, όσο και στην πρόοδο που παρατηρήθηκε στην εξέλιξη των χρηματοοικονομικών τεχνικών των τραπεζών.

Χωρίς αμφιβολία, ο αρχιτέκτονας της αλματώδους αύξησης των τιμών των ακινήτων και ένας από τους θερμότερους οπαδούς της υιοθέτησης καινοτομιών στον χρηματοοικονομικό τομέα υπήρξε ο Άλαν Γκρίνσπαν, ο οποίος διηύθυνε επί 19 χρόνια την αμερικανική Ομοσπονδιακή Κεντρική Τράπεζα και τον οποίο οι χρηματοοικονομικοί κύκλοι είχαν ανακηρύξει -σχεδόν ομόφωνα- μεγάλο « μαέστρο ». [2]

Οι διαδοχικές δηλώσεις του καθοδηγούσαν την πρακτική που όφειλε να υιοθετήσει η χρηματοοικονομική σφαίρα.

Το 2002 εκτιμούσε ότι « καμία πολιτική δεν ήταν σε θέση να ανακόψει τη διόγκωση της χρηματοοικονομικής φούσκας », τη στιγμή ακριβώς που ο ίδιος την τροφοδοτούσε με την πολιτική μείωσης των επιτοκίων την οποία υπαγόρευε και ταυτόχρονα ακολούθησε.
Το 2004 δήλωσε ότι « η σοβαρή μείωση των δραστηριοτήτων της κτηματαγοράς στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες είναι ελάχιστα πιθανή, λόγω του μεγέθους και της ποικιλομορφίας της ». Το 2005 πρόσθεσε : « Στην περίπτωση που υπάρξει μείωση της τιμής των κατοικιών, δεν θα έχει σοβαρές μακροοικονομικές συνέπειες ».

Την ίδια χρονιά, εκτιμούσε ότι « τα ολοένα πολυπλοκότερα χρηματοοικονομικά εργαλεία έχουν συμβάλει στην ανάπτυξη ενός πολύ πιο ευέλικτου, αποτελεσματικότερου και περισσότερο στέρεου χρηματοοικονομικού συστήματος, σε σύγκριση με εκείνο που υπήρχε πριν από 25 χρόνια ».

Το 2006, την παραμονή του σπασίματος της φούσκας των ακινήτων -κι ενώ δεν ήταν πλέον το αφεντικό της Fed- προχώρησε στην εκτίμηση ότι « οι χειρότερες στιγμές της πτώσης της τιμής των ακινήτων αποτελούν πλέον παρελθόν ». [3]

Παρόμοιες δηλώσεις είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα να ενθαρρυνθούν οι επενδύσεις σε μετοχές και ομόλογα των Fannie Mae και Freddie Mac, οι οποίες γνώρισαν τότε πρωτοφανή αύξηση του κύκλου εργασιών και των κερδών τους. Ωστόσο, η χρυσή εποχή είχε κηλιδωθεί από πολλά σκάνδαλα και στις δύο τράπεζες.

Το 2004, η πρώτη κατηγορήθηκε ότι είχε « εξωραΐσει » τον ισολογισμό της, έτσι ώστε να δικαιολογείται η χορήγηση ακόμα πιο πλουσιοπάροχων μπόνους. Τα τρία κορυφαία στελέχη της αναγκάστηκαν να παραιτηθούν και να πληρώσουν πρόστιμο 100 εκατομμυρίων δολαρίων. Ενώ το 2006, η δεύτερη καταδικάστηκε να πληρώσει πρόστιμο 3,8 εκατομμυρίων δολαρίων εξαιτίας του παράνομου λόμπι που είχε δημιουργήσει για να επιτύχει ευνοϊκή μεταχείριση από τα μέλη του Κογκρέσου, που ήταν επιφορτισμένα με την εποπτεία των δραστηριοτήτων της.

 

Οι περίεργοι γίγαντες

Το υβριδικό καθεστώς των δύο γιγάντων της αγοράς ενυπόθηκων δανείων τους επέτρεπε να επωφελούνται από τη σύγχυση που δημιουργούσε η διπλή τους φύση. Αν και η αποστολή τους είχε κοινωνικό χαρακτήρα (να επιτρέψουν στον μεγαλύτερο δυνατό αριθμό πολιτών να αποκτήσει ακίνητη περιουσία), επεδίωκαν να μεγιστοποιήσουν τα κέρδη των μετόχων τους, κι ακόμα περισσότερο, τις απολαβές των ηγετικών στελεχών τους. Ενδεικτικά να αναφέρουμε ότι οι ετήσιες αποδοχές καθενός από τους διευθύνοντες συμβούλους της Fannie Mae και της Freddie Mac ανέρχονταν στα 70 εκατομμύρια δολάρια.

Επιπλέον, οι δύο εταιρείες είχαν αποκτήσει τεράστια πολιτική επιρροή. Φάνηκαν δε εξαιρετικά γενναιόδωρες απέναντι στα μέλη του Κογκρέσου -και των δύο κομμάτων- τα οποία επαναλάμβαναν αδιάκοπα πόσο επείγον ήταν να χαλαρώσουν οι « αγκυλώσεις » του νομοθετικού πλαισίου. Το αποτέλεσμα ήταν να χαλαρώσουν οι κανόνες της προληπτικής εποπτείας που ίσχυαν θεωρητικά και να επικρατήσει αδιαφάνεια στη σύσκεψη δανείων.

Κατά παράδοξο τρόπο, όταν, τον Αύγουστο του 2007, ξέσπασε η κρίση των subprimes, (στεγαστικά δάνεια υψηλού ρίσκου) όλοι θεωρούσαν εύλογο να υποστηρίζουν ότι η θύελλα δεν θα άγγιζε τη Fannie Mae και τη Freddie Mac. Η αύξηση του κύκλου εργασιών τους συνεχιζόταν και οι « αγορές » δεν έδιναν την παραμικρή σημασία στις ανωμαλίες της λειτουργίας των δυο αυτών τραπεζών.

Κι ενώ αυξανόταν σε επικίνδυνο βαθμό ο αριθμός των νοικοκυριών που αδυνατούσαν να αποπληρώσουν τα δάνειά τους, οι φορείς εποπτείας έκαναν ακόμα περισσότερες παραχωρήσεις στους δύο γίγαντες των ενυπόθηκων δανείων.Στις 19 Μαρτίου του 2008 (τρεις ημέρες μετά τη σωτηρία -την τελευταία στιγμή- της τράπεζας Bear Stearns), το υπουργείο Οικονομικών, με το πρόσχημα της αναχαίτισης της πτώσης των τιμών των ακινήτων και της σταθεροποίησης των αγορών, επέτρεψε στις Fannie Mae και Freddie Mac να μειώσουν κατά ένα τρίτο τα κεφάλαια τα οποία όφειλαν να διαθέτουν για να ανταποκριθούν στις δεσμεύσεις που είχαν αναλάβει. Να επρόκειτο, άραγε, για τύφλωση ή για παραπληροφόρηση ; Σε όσους έβλεπαν σε αυτή την ενέργεια ένα βήμα προς τη διάσωση από το κράτος, ο Τζέιμς Λόκχαρτ, ο διευθυντής του φορέα εποπτείας των δύο χρηματοπιστωτικών ιδρυμάτων, απαντούσε : « Δεν τίθεται θέμα διάσωσης, είναι παραλογισμός. Αυτές οι εταιρείες είναι υγιείς και στέρεες και θα εξακολουθήσουν να είναι ».

Τελικά, η συσσώρευση ζημιών διέψευσε τα αισιόδοξα σενάρια των οικονομικών αναλυτών. [4] Τότε, λοιπόν, άρχισαν να εξετάζουν κάθε λεπτομέρεια της λειτουργίας αλλά και των δυσλειτουργιών του συστήματος χορήγησης ενυπόθηκων δανείων. Κι οι « αγορές » αναγκάστηκαν να παραδεχτούν ότι η κατάσταση συνοψιζόταν στα εξής προφανή : η αξία των τίτλων subprimes που κατείχαν η Fannie Mae κι η Freddie μειωνόταν διαρκώς, ο αριθμός των αφερέγγυων δανειοληπτών αυξανόταν, η πτώση των τιμών στην κτηματαγορά συνεχιζόταν και οι φόβοι ότι θα επακολουθήσει οικονομική ύφεση πύκνωναν.

 

 

Πολιτική παρέμβαση

Καθώς ήταν επείγον να βρεθεί μια λύση, η εκτελεστική εξουσία διαπραγματεύτηκε με το Κογκρέσο. Το υπουργείο Οικονομικών εξουσιοδοτήθηκε τότε να πραγματοποιήσει μαζικές αγορές τίτλων που είχαν εκδώσει οι δύο τράπεζες (Fannie Mae και Freddie Mac), να τους χορηγήσει δάνεια και επιπλέον να αποκτήσει, στο όνομα της ομοσπονδιακής κυβέρνησης, συμμετοχή στο κεφάλαιο των εταιρειών. Σε αντάλλαγμα, θα αυξανόταν ο έλεγχος των οργανισμών εποπτείας. Κατά τη διάρκεια δημόσιας ακρόασης, ο ρεπουμπλικάνος γερουσιαστής Τζιμ Μπάνιγκς απευθύνθηκε στον υπουργό Οικονομικών με τα εξής λόγια : « Όταν άνοιξα την εφημερίδα μου χτες, νόμισα πως ξύπνησα στη Γαλλία. [5] Όμως, δεν συνέβαινε κάτι τέτοιο, αντίθετα, απ’ ό,τι φαίνεται, ο σοσιαλισμός επικρατεί τώρα στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες ».

Στις 30 Ιουλίου, ο νόμος ψηφίστηκε με μεγάλη πλειοψηφία και κυρώθηκε αμέσως από τον πρόεδρο Μπους. Αλλά αποδείχθηκε ανεπαρκής : Μέσα σε δώδεκα μήνες, οι ζημίες που κατέγραψαν η Fannie Mae και η Freddie Mac έφτασαν τα 14 δισ. δολάρια, ενώ η αξία των μετοχών τους υποχώρησε περισσότερο κι από το 90%. Ταυτόχρονα, οι ανάγκες τους για κεφάλαια αυξάνονταν διαρκώς : μεταξύ άλλων, έπρεπε να αποπληρώσουν χρέη 1,6 τρισ. δολαρίων, από τα οποία τα 230 δισ. επρόκειτο να καταστούν ληξιπρόθεσμα στα τέλη Σεπτεμβρίου. Επιπλέον, αντιμετώπιζαν μεγάλο κίνδυνο : οι κεντρικές τράπεζες της Ασίας, της Ευρώπης και της Ρωσίας απειλούσαν να σταματήσουν να αγοράζουν τους τίτλους τους. [6]

Έτσι, η αμερικανική κυβέρνηση συνειδητοποίησε ότι δεν είχε πλέον άλλη επιλογή. Η πτώχευση των ακρογωνιαίων λίθων στους οποίους στηριζόταν το αμερικανικό σύστημα χορήγησης ενυπόθηκων δανείων ήταν αδιανόητη. Όσο αδιανόητη ήταν, από πολιτική άποψη, και η διάσωσή τους από τα κρατικά επενδυτικά σχήματα χωρών της Ασίας ή της Μέσης Ανατολής. Το μόνο που απέμενε ήταν η κρατικοποίησή τους, έστω κι αν αυτή η λέξη -φορτισμένη με αρνητική σημασία- δεν ειπώθηκε ποτέ. Έγινε απλώς λόγος για κρατική κηδεμονία (conservatorship).

 

 

Η απόφαση παρουσιάστηκε από το υπουργείο Οικονομικών ως « ο καλύτερος τρόπος για να προστατευθούν οι αγορές μας και οι φορολογούμενοι από τον συστημικό κίνδυνο που δημιουργεί η παρούσα κατάσταση του χρηματοοικονομικού συστήματος ».Η πολιτική ηγεσία -συμπεριλαμβανομένων και των υποψηφίων Μπάρακ Ομπάμα και Τζον Μακέιν- και οι οικονομικοί κύκλοι χαιρέτησαν την απόφαση. Οι ηγεσίες των κεντρικών τραπεζών της Ευρώπης, της Ασίας και της Αμερικής άφησαν να διαφανεί η ανακούφισή τους. Ο Ζαν Κλοντ Τρισέ, πρόεδρος της Ευρωπαϊκής Κεντρικής Τράπεζας (ΕΚΤ), μίλησε « για μια πολύ σημαντική και καλοδεχούμενη απόφαση ». Ακόμη και οι συντηρητικοί κύκλοι, οι οποίοι συνηθίζουν να κατακεραυνώνουν οτιδήποτε έχει σχέση με την παρέμβαση του κράτους, δήλωσαν ότι η απόφαση ήταν λυπηρή μεν, αναγκαία δε. Μάλιστα, ορισμένοι δεν παρέλειψαν να υπενθυμίσουν ότι οι δυσλειτουργίες των δύο ιδρυμάτων οφείλονταν στον ημιδημόσιο χαρακτήρα τους.

Ωστόσο, το ακριβές περιεχόμενο της κρατικοποίησης που δεν θέλει να παρουσιάζεται ως τέτοια παραμένει θολό.

Τι θα γίνει μετά το time out που σφύριξε ο Πόλσον ; Θα ακολουθήσει η δημιουργία ενός ή δύο κρατικών χρηματοοικονομικών ιδρυμάτων ; Η θα ιδιωτικοποιηθούν ξανά ;

Εξακολουθούν δε, να βρίσκονται σε εκκρεμότητα σημαντικά ερωτήματα, ενώ οι λεπτομέρειες που ενδέχεται να προκαλέσουν την ανησυχία των φορολογούμενων (ιδιαίτερα το κόστος διάσωσης) αφήνονται γι’ αργότερα. Πρόκειται για ένα ακόμη δώρο που θα κληροδοτήσει ο Τζορτζ Μπους στον διάδοχό του.

Spiced Rubbed Pork Chops

Is there any ingredient in your kitchen that you probably have too much of? In my kitchen it's spices. I have way too much. In fact, my spice collection has taken up one of the largest drawers I have in the kitchen and another small basket in a cabinet. Thankfully I don't have large quantities of any one kind of spice or spice blend. Instead, I tend to have small amounts of several {too many?}spices. So when I'm faced with what to make with any given protein {beef, chicken, pork, seafood, or even vegetable}, I try to use the spices I have  for flavor. The other night I had a couple pork chops to work with and I came across this recipe for Spiced Rubbed Pork Chops. Coriander, cumin and brown sugar blend together to create a slight glaze that's flavorful and compliments the pork. It was quick and easy, making it a great choice for a no-fuss weeknight dinner. I served it with a Golden Nutty Rice Pilaf which paired perfectly...


Coriander is one of those spices I purchased because I needed a small amount for another recipe. It's a spice I don't use very often but when I came across this recipe, I was happy to find another application for it. Together with cumin, it reminded me of the Mediterranean flavors with a slight sweetness. You could even spice your pork beforehand rather than just before cooking to allow the pork to absorb the flavor longer.

Spiced Rubbed Pork Chops

2 (4-ounce) boneless pork loin chops (about 3/4 inch thick)
1/8 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil

Heat a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Sprinkle pork with 1/8 teaspoon garlic salt. Combine coriander, cumin, and sugar in a shallow bowl. Sprinkle spice mixture over 1 side of pork. Add oil to pan; swirl to coat. Add pork to pan, spice side down. Cook 2 minutes or until browned. Turn pork over, and cook 4 minutes or until done.

All Autism Meltdowns Are Not Panic Attacks

On Twitter in the past 24 hours the questionably named Thinking Persons Guide to Autism does what it often does: distributing unproven, non evidence based, opinions as representing all there is to know about autism.

On this occasion the TPGA Re-Tweeted one person's opinion about meltdowns; offering the less than carefully thought out over simplification that autistic meltdown are panic attacks not tantrums. The problem with this statement is that it oversimplifies what is often, at least for my severely autistic son, a very complex behavior. With the concluding remark the "Thinking" Persons Guide To Autism then encourages others to RT this oversimplified, incorrect notion that all meltdowns are  panic attacks:

My 16 year old son is severely autistic. He is also assessed with profound developmental delays. His meltdown behaviors are complex at any time. His meltdowns are not all triggered by the same events. Some appear to be frustration based in terms of the inability to do ... or to stop doing something when he obsesses with something like a Little Einstein video. Some times his meltdowns appear to be triggered by internal physical discomfort of various sorts. Some times they appear to be related to seizure activity. 

I am talking at this point only about my own severely autistic son not about other persons with autism disorders whether they be severely autistic with limited communication skills or whether they are High Functioning Neurodiversity activists promoting their perception of their autism condition as the universal reality for all persons with autism disorders.

I can not, and do not,  say that ALL persons with autism disorders experience meltdowns in the same way or for the same reasons as my son.  What I do say is that the person involved with the original tweet and the Thinking Persons Guide To Autism can not say that my son's meltdowns are always panic attacks.  

My son's  complex meltdown behaviors are just not that simple..... pass THAT on please!
