Appearance of Bias - Taser Company Cozy With Coronors

The Globe and Mail has reported on the cozy ties between Taser International and some coronors, the officials often responsible for investigating Taser related deaths; a cozy relationship which creates an appearance of bias on the part of one very prominent Canadian coronor. In Taser firms picked up coroner's lecture tab the Globe reports that Taser International has paid hotel and travel expenses for prominent Canadian coronor Dr. James Cairns, Ontario's deputy chief coronor, who has given seminars "on the phenomenon of "excited delirium," a medically unrecognized term that the company often cites as a reason people die after being tasered". Hope you enjoy it...AppetizerWhat is your favorite carnival/amusement park ride?I have always and will always love The Zipper...would I ever ride it now? No way. Oh most definitely!Soup How do you react in uncomfortable social situations?I guess I haven't been in one in so long I am not really sure how I react. I probably become more loud and outgoing

It Was Pizza Again!

Yesterday was a very disorganized day for me! I am trying to get a ton of things done before Friday because my sister is coming to visit and I want to spend as much time with her as I can. Unfortunately I always take on way too many things and end up a little frazzled. This week I decided that I needed to get all of my recipes from this blog put in recipe format and on my website as well as on here. Should have been easy right...no way! For some reason my links won't work. I had one of my bf's come over yesterday and she gave me an alternate way of doing it but it still irks me that it won't work the way that it should. Then last night I was goin

Increased Gray Matter and Abnormal Mirror Neuron System Functioning in Children with Autism

A study led by Manzar Ashtari, Ph.D., from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, and presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) suggests that the inability of autistic children to relate to people and life situations in an ordinary way may be the result of an abnormally functioning mirror neuron system. The study uses a novel imaging technique to study autistic children and found increased gray matter in the brain areas that govern social processing and learning by observation. The amount of gray matter in the left parietal area of the brain correlated with IQ in the control children but not i

Not Traditional Chicken Pot Pie!

Tuesday nights are kinda crazy in the Chiappini house. The children stay at school until 3:30 so my youngest one can stay for "stretch and grow". After I pick them up they have a bit of time to play and get some homework done then it's onto Karate and Ice Skating. T. takes the oldest to Karate and I take the youngest to Skating. We aren't able to get back home until about 7:30 or so. Makes dinner time kind of late. We have tried to eat before but it is just too rushed. So now we are eating after. T. gets home early than us so he usually makes dinner on Tuesday. I wasn't kidding when I said it was hectic!Last night we had a great idea. Let's f

UN Committee Calls for World Autism Day, April 2

The United Nations Third Committee has approved, without a vote, a resolution sponsored by Qatar, calling on the General Assembly to designate April 2 as World Autism Day. Qatar, as the primary sponsor of the resolution issued a press release which follows. It is encouraging to see autism issues being moved on to the world stage. This kind of attention should help encourage those national governments, including the Government of Canada, which are doing little or nothing to address the autism crisis in their countries. It is no surprise that Autism Speaks, with co-founders Bob and Suzanne Wright, is at the forefront once again, in raising autism

Autism Dad Kavchak Asks Canadian Health Minister For REAL Autism Action

For several years Andrew Kavchak, parent of an autistic child/child with autism, has campaigned relentlessly for a National Autism Strategy. As the father of an autistic child Mr. Kavchak understands the need for a National effort to address Canada's autism crisis. While movement appeared headed in that direction last year with the passage of the Andy Scott/Peter Stoffer private member's motion and the debate on Shawn Murphy's initiative, the momentum toward a National Autism Strategy has been stopped cold, as intended, by the neo-conservative ideology of the Harper government and Health Minister Tony Clement. In his polite letter to Health Minister

The Golden Birthday Dessert...

So last night, I realized at about 7pm that I needed to make a tiramisu for my friend's bday today. Having been in my pjs all day, I dreaded getting dressed to go to the store. I decided to take a chance and whip up something with the ingredients on hand. The end result? Not exactly a tiramisu, but a chocolate chai trifle! The birthday gal loved it! Autism's Worst Anti-ABA Rhetoric Award 2007

The anti-ABA ideologues who lobby incessantly to keep parents from gaining access to proven effective Applied Behavior Analysis intervention for their autistic children have produced some incredible excesses over the years. Particularly noteworthy is the ludicrous claim that helping autistic children by ABA methods infringes the civil rights of autistic persons. According to the anti-ABA internet crowd helping a child make the gains reported in the recent American Academy of Pediatrics autism reports is actually a violation of the human rights of autistic persons; an imposition of the values of the Neurologically Typical on autistic children. A co

Autism Reality - What Happens To Our Children When We Are Gone?

I may have been too quick when I mentioned the excellent Vancouver Sun feature Faces of Autism as one of the rare exceptions to the "feel good" avoid autism reality mindset of the mainstream media. In Who will care when the caregiver goes? the Toronto Star discusses the fear that haunt many parents of autistic children - what happens when we are gone? Who will care for our autistic children, where will they live, and how? Will they be happy? autism

CNN's Invisible Faces of Autism

Despite significant media attention being paid to autism low functioning, truly low functioning, persons with autism remain invisible. The exception to this rule is the Vancouver Sun which provided the most comprehensive presentation of persons with autism from all points of the autism spectrum with its excellent Faces of Autism series. The Vancouver Sun, Pete McMartin, columnist, and Glenn Baglo, photographer, deserve full credit for daring to portray realities of life for persons from across the full spectrum of autism disorders and their families. I say they "dared" to portray these realities because of the hostility generated by image conscious

Daring Bakers November 2007 Challenge - Tender Potato Bread

When I first started this blog back in August I really had no idea which direction it was that I wanted to go with it. I figured (as I do with the rest of my life) "that it would work itself out" As usual I was right. This blog has made me a more creative and out of the box cook and baker than I ever thought I would be! One of the things that I find so wonderful is the amount of people out there blogging about food! And then came my discovery of the challenges!!! I love food challenges...anything that takes me out of my comfort zone and I can get my hands into and please people's tummies ! But I kept seeing a badge on the people's sites that I reall
