Smokey Sloppy Joes

It's another sandwich day! This time it's a hot sandwich filling that's a little messy but oh so good. Forget the stuff in a can. Forget the sodium bomb packets of seasoning. This sandwich is best made with fresh ingredients! These Smokey Sloppy Joes takes ground beef, onions, and bell peppers mixed in a tangy, slightly smokey sauce, served up in a toasted bun for a finger licking good sandwich...

It's been ages since I had a sloppy joe sandwich. But thanks to The Baron, he came up with this dinner idea not too long ago. Having made these, I wondered why I haven't made them more often... they're so good and gave me fond memories of my grade school years lol. To jazz a great recipe up ever so slightly, I added a touch of liquid smoke which worked very well. And to make this sandwich even better, I used Turano Baking Company's Gourmet Rolls.

Smokey Sloppy Joes
recipe from Cooking Light

  • 3/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 3/4 pound ground round
  • 2 cups no-salt-added tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon prepared mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 (1 1/2-ounce) rolls, split
Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add first 3 ingredients; cook until beef is browned, stirring to crumble. Stir in tomato sauce and remaining ingredients except rolls; reduce heat to medium-low. Cover and cook 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Spoon 1/4 cup beef mixture over bottom half of each bun. Cover with top halves.
